A New Academic Year, New Opportunities to Advance Our Research Mission
As the fall semester begins, I want to welcome each of you back to campus. Whether you are returning to ongoing projects, launching new initiatives, mentoring students, running programs, or building new collaborations, fall semester offers a fresh opportunity to advance research, scholarship, and creative activity.
We enter this academic year amid uncertainty surrounding state budget decisions. While we cannot predict every outcome, we can all take proactive steps to strengthen UMSL’s position. I encourage each of you to stay informed about state and federal budget developments and to continue pursuing external funding opportunities that support your work and advance UMSL’s mission.

Now is an especially important time to build and strengthen partnerships, submit proposals, and explore creative approaches to fundraising and resource development. Diversifying our funding sources will help us navigate budget challenges and ensure UMSL’s continued growth and success.
I also encourage you to think broadly about funding opportunities. Federal agencies remain important partners, but foundations, industry collaborations, community partnerships, philanthropic support, and other creative funding mechanisms can also play a valuable role in growing our research enterprise and advancing UMSL’s mission.
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, I remain optimistic about what we can accomplish together. UMSL has a strong tradition of innovation and collaboration, and our research community has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to adapt and thrive. By staying informed, pursuing opportunities aggressively, and supporting each other, we can continue to advance UMSL’s mission. We are in this together.
The Office of Research, Economic and Community Development is committed to supporting your efforts. Thank you for all you do to advance UMSL’s mission. Best wishes for a successful fall semester.

Expanding the Art of Printmaking |
Jeffrey Sipple is a professor in UMSL’s department of Art and Design. Through his innovative approach to printmaking, he continues to expand the creative possibilities of an ancient artistic tradition for a new generation of artists. A master printmaker whose career has been devoted to lithography, Sippel blends traditional techniques with creative experimentation, continually seeking new ways to push the medium forward. Whether in the studio or classroom, Sippel explores innovative and less toxic printmaking methods that benefit not only his own artistic practice but also fellow artists and students.
|
|
| |
|
His current passion is Mokulito, or wood lithography, a technique that originated in Japan and combines the expressive qualities of wood with the rich possibilities of lithography. Alongside artist Eva Budka, Sippel introduced a new variation of the process to U.S. audiences at the 2011 Southern Graphics International Conference. Since then, he has continued to refine and share the technique through exhibitions, workshops, and presentations around the world.
|
When he is not in the studio, Sippel can often be found pursuing another passion: fishing. His favorite fishing partners these days are his grandsons. It is not uncommon for Sipple to pair printmaking talks with fishing opportunities whenever possible.
|
You can see Sippel’s work at the Blanch M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, Millenium Student Center, UMSL Creative Arts Building and soon in Anheuser Bush Hall. To learn more visit https://www.jeffreysippel.com.
