Ballot Question Asks Voters to Decide if the Existing .5 Cent Sales Tax Should Be Extended

On August 28, the Wheat Ridge City Council approved the second reading and adoption of an ordinance that asks voters to extend the existing .5 sales tax to fund the following:
  • Sidewalk, bike lane and street improvements on primary street corridors such as 32nd Ave., 38th Ave., 44th Ave, and Youngfield St.
  • Filling sidewalk gaps throughout the city with an emphasis on major pedestrian corridors and routes to schools
  • Drainage and floodplain infrastructure improvements throughout the city
The decision was made following the July 17 city council meeting, where results from a resident survey regarding this issue were reviewed. The results were overwhelmingly positive, 79% of voters said they would support extending the .5 cent sales tax for an additional 20 years to fund street, sidewalk, and drainage improvements.

Projects were decided based on direct resident feedback from programs like Let’s Talk and the residential survey.

The existing .5 cent sales tax is about to hit its $38.5 million revenue cap. Using this revenue, the city was able to invest in projects like Clear Creek Crossing, Anderson Park, Wadsworth Boulevard, and the Wheat Ridge – Ward Commuter Rail Station.

Wadsworth Improvement Project Update

Work at the 44th Avenue and Wadsworth intersection is a major focus this month. Crews are constructing the north half of the continuous flow intersection (CFI) now. Concrete work for the south side of the intersection was completed in September.

Wadsworth businesses are open! Construction may impact how access is configured so drivers are asked to follow signs, traffic control devices, and crew instructions when flaggers are present.

Subscribe to receive traffic alerts on the city's website and find updates on What's Up Wheat Ridge. Any community concerns may be directed to the project hotline at 303-390-0878 or email the project team at WadsworthProject@ci.wheatridge.co.us. Watch our video about the latest Wadsworth news

38th Avenue West End Improvements Logo

How do you want to travel along 38th Avenue between Kipling Street and Youngfield Street and what kinds of improvements are needed to make that a reality? The project team has developed three alternative roadway designs based on the community feedback we received in June. This October, you'll be able to check out the alternatives, share your thoughts, and ask any questions you may have. Your input will inform decisions and establish the future of traveling along this corridor.
Participate by taking the online survey that is open until October 31, or attend the in-person open house on Wednesday, October 25 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center (4005 Kipling Street).
