Silicon Valley Imperialism with Erin McElroy

Monday, May 12, 2025, 12:00 - 1:30 PM
Lane History Corner, Bldg. 200, Rm. 105

Join us for an event with Erin McElroy, author of Silicon Valley Imperialism: Techno Fantasies and Frictions in Postsocialist Times. Drawing on research from the U.S. and Romania, McElroy explores how the forces that shaped Silicon Valley—gentrification, racial dispossession, and economic predation—are now globalizing, embedding themselves in postsocialist societies. Their work reveals the imperial mechanisms behind techno-capitalism’s expansion and how it displaces communities while masking itself as progress. This talk will explore how liberal and fascist ideologies converge in the tech sector and highlight ongoing resistance by organizers and artists. McElroy, a professor at the University of Washington and cofounder of the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, brings a critical lens to the intersection of technology, empire, and housing justice. Light lunch will be provided —RSVP here.
