Thanksgiving Break Housing
Thanksgiving break is approaching! Some important reminders to consider when making travel plans:
  • Residence halls close at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, and re-open at 9 a.m. on Sunday, November 26.
  • Approved students may remain in their fall housing assignment for Thanksgiving Break.
  • The deadline to submit the application is noon on Friday, November 10.

Some thoughts from Hank Malin P’15, Executive Director of the Austin E. Knowlton Center for Career Exploration
Greetings from beautiful Granville! It was great to meet some of you during Big Red Weekend. Thank you for stopping by our Open House and our presentation on Saturday morning — and for bringing your students along with you. Here are some great opportunities we in the Knowlton Center for Career Exploration will be sharing with your students over the next few weeks.
OnBoardOnBoard is a set of 60+ online units on topics ranging from Excel to Project Management, to Finance Skills to Marketing. They are self-paced units filled with content, pre- and post-assessments, and real-world simulations that give students real-time feedback. Hundreds of students have completed these units and have found them valuable for skill-building, job interviews, as well as on-the-job during internships or post-graduate employment. For example, an English major who is interested in media jobs could complete units in Marketing and Project Management to help build professional skills. All students can access OnBoard during our winter, spring, and summer breaks. Look for a postcard addressed to your student during the week of November 20 with sign-up information.
Wisr — Wisr is an online student and alumni network/connecting tool. Students identify alumni who match with their backgrounds or potential interest and make a date for a phone conversation. This month we are offering it to all Denison students. Because each Denison alum who signs up is willing to talk to our students, we like to think of Wisr as a “warm call,” versus LinkedIn, which might be more of a “cold call.” We also plan to invite all Denison parents to join Wisr starting in January, so stay tuned for more information about that.
Boot Camp — Our first-ever on-campus “Boot Camp” will take place during the last three days of winter break (January 17-19, 2018). This highly interactive experience will include workshops around Career Exploration, Resume and Cover Letter writing, Interview Skills, Networking (with local alumni), and a trip to “First Look” organizations in Columbus. This program targets sophomores who are at any point in their career exploration journey. Specific details have been provided to all sophomores.
Finally, if you aren’t already following our Knowlton Center Facebook page, it’s not too late! You can keep up to date on which organizations and graduate programs are recruiting at Denison and keep abreast of other programs we are offering to students, including our new Learning Labs, which are hour-long interactive sessions on topics such as resumes, interviewing, and networking.

Each summer, more than 120 Denison students from all class years and majors receive monetary awards to conduct an independent or collaborative project under the close supervision of a Denison faculty member in our acclaimed Summer Scholar Program. Awards go to projects in all the disciplines: about 60 percent of Summer Scholars work on projects in the sciences; the rest undertake projects in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. (Projects do not need to be in the student’s major).
Denison Summer Scholars receive a stipend ($3,700 in 2017), a campus housing allowance, and they are free from the pressures of grades and credits. On-campus awards support 10 weeks of work with a faculty-led laboratory research team or on an independent project of the student’s own design. It’s a unique opportunity to explore an intellectual passion, experience the challenges and rewards of intensive academic research, and build a close relationship with a faculty mentor. (Click or tap here to watch a short video about the program.) Off-Campus awards support projects that must take place partly or fully away from campus. Last summer, students traveled to Martinique, England, Spain, Poland, Guinea and elsewhere to conduct research. (Off-Campus awards provide additional funds for travel expenses.)
In addition, Early Experience awards offer current first-year students (rising sophomores) a chance to conduct a shorter and less-intensive project (5 to 6 weeks) as an introduction to scholarly research. (First-year students may still apply for regular 10-week awards.)
The first step for interested students is to find a faculty mentor interested in working with them and to work closely with that professor to develop a compelling proposal. Students should attend an upcoming information session and get started on their proposals this semester. Information sessions will take place in Olin Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8; and at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 9. The application deadline is Thursday, February 1, 2018.

The semester is progressing, exams are approaching, and for many Denison students, that means little sleep with added stress and anxiety. While it’s not uncommon for the typical college student to survive all-night study sessions, if students are having trouble handling the pressure of exams, we encourage them to talk to with their professors, resident assistant (RA) or a staff member of Whisler Center for Student Wellness 740-587-6200.
Encourage your student to go to the De-Stress Fest from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, in William Howard Doane Library with free chair massages, pet therapy, crafts, coloring, and snacks.
Share these quick and easy ways to help manage stress for your student:
  • Eat healthy foods including fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. This will improve your energy and ability to think clearly.
  • Stay active. Exercise is one of the best ways to beat stress. Even a few minutes every day can help.
  • Study with friends. Being in a group will help you feel less isolated, and you may even have a little fun.
  • Build in time for breaks. Take a few minutes to take a walk, practice deep breathing or other relaxing activities that help you clear your head and feel reenergized.
  • Get plenty of rest. You might not be able to get as much sleep as you’re used to but aim for at least 6-7 hours each night. People who are well rested do better on exams.
  • Avoid using any drugs or alcohol. They can cloud your mental abilities and actually harm your performance.
  • Get support. Turn to family and friends for support during this exciting, yet challenging time in your life. Remember just do the best you can do.

By now, you should have heard that Denison has embarked on an ambitious comprehensive campaign to support its visionary strategic plan. The Unlocking Potential campaign supports six critical objectives contributing to student success: funding for significant student scholarships; curricular innovation and faculty resources; implementation of the gold standard in college career exploration; enrichment and enhancement of the performing arts; wellness and co-curricular learning in residence communities; and ongoing support for the college’s Annual Fund. To learn more about the campaign, read the news release, and to see videos of Unlocking Potential in action, visit unlock.denison.edu.
A reminder to families of seniors graduating in May
We want to mention again that there is another large event scheduled in Central Ohio during the same weekend as Denison’s Commencement, May 18-19. A three-day rock festival, Rock on the Range, will be held at the Columbus Crew’s home soccer field, MAPFRE Stadium, and the festival attracts large numbers of visitors from out of town. Because local lodging is significantly affected, if you are planning to stay in Columbus-area accommodations for Commencement Weekend 2018, we encourage you to make your reservations as early as possible. For more information about campus and area accommodations visit the Commencement web section.
