Hybrid Learning Comes to Knight Nation

April 5th was a special day in Knight Nation history. We welcomed back our first cohort of hybrid learning students after a long 13 months of comprehensive distance learning. Following CDC guidelines and other school-implemented safety protocols, 48 students filled the hallways and classrooms with footsteps and laughter, noises that had been absent in the building this past year. Each student was welcomed back with a DLSNC "Goodie Bag" filled with Knight Nation memorabilia and custom-made personal size sanitizing supplies.

Having the opportunity to work with our students face to face--or mask to mask--is priceless! It was well worth all the wait, all the Google Meets, and all the protocol changes during this time. We are at our best when we are working in person with our students and families. A HUGE SHOUT-OUT goes to all of our staff, faculty, and families for making this day happen. It's just one example of the resilience of our Knight Nation Community.

DLSNC Junior Wins Top Honor in Essay Contest

Josiah Liebert’s essay, Handshake, has won a top award in the Garaventa Center High School Essay Contest hosted by the University of Portland and the Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture. Chosen from “an exceptionally fine batch of submissions,” the judges’ panel shared that they found the essay to be “lyrical, wise and very graceful.” Responding to the prompt What is Real? Josiah shared that the inspiration for his essay came from “the wonderful experiences I have received in my time playing chess as well as my English teachers.” He is proud that others can relate to his piece and plans to save his winnings as he prepares to go to college.

An Evening with Bob Ross, Ms. McDermott, and Ms. Frangipani

Inspired to try new ways of connecting virtually, an adventurous group of staff and students gathered virtually with Ms. McDermott and Ms. Frangipani to paint along with Bob Ross. The group followed "A Peaceful Reflection" step-by-step, in Bob Ross fashion, to paint their masterpieces. Check out these happy trees!

Friday Afternoon Film Club Brings Students Together

Remember what going to the movies was like (before COVID...)? Ah, those were the days.

During the 2020–21 school year our students are participating in an online Film Club every other Friday afternoon to watch cinema classics together. Beginning with Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and making our way through works like Jaws, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Do the Right Thing, students have been hanging out in a non-classroom setting while learning a thing or two about what makes movies great: visual spectacle, a compelling plot, meaningful character development, attention to detail in camera work and set design.

“I joined Film Club as a way to relax after a long week of classes. It's good to be in a club where we can just sit back and chill and not have to worry about assignments," says Lakyah Polk '23.

Students are learning to "read" films of master storytellers—and they are having lots of fun doing it. Meeting "chats" throughout the viewings are rife with comments like “WHAAAAAT…?!?!?” and “Oh no she didn’t!”

“It’s always a fun time and I love seeing new movies from genres I won’t usually seek out to watch, such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” says Kennedy Pereira '22.

Students of all grades, staff, and even family members are welcome to join Film Club at any time. Film Club "elders" have been known to share their experiences of moviegoing from days of yore as students experience these great stories for themselves.
