Important SDS Testing Process Information |
|
|
-
Students are encouraged to notify their instructors of the approved accommodations they wish to use in the course early in the quarter by sending the Faculty Notification Letter via the AIM Student Portal. This must be completed at least 10 days prior to the first exam/quiz in a course that a student is requesting to use their approved testing accommodations on. Students who notify their instructors less than 10 days prior to the first exam/quiz in the course must contact proctor@uchicago.edu immediately to discuss SDS availability to proctor their exam due to the late notice and capacity limitations.
-
Students are encouraged to reach out to their instructor(s) after sending the Faculty Notification Letter to discuss testing arrangements in the course. If an instructor requests SDS assistance with proctoring on their behalf, SDS will schedule the exams on behalf of students with testing accommodations. SDS scheduled students can expect to receive an e-mail notification confirming the details of their proctoring appointment with SDS at least 7 days in advance of the exam date. Students should note that exams may not be scheduled at the date/time of the exam for the class, and are encouraged to carefully review any testing details communicated by SDS. Students are able to review all of the exams scheduled with SDS in the AIM Student Portal, under “Alternative Testing”. Students are also able to view the location of their exams in the AIM Student Portal 2 calendar days before the exam. Directions to SDS testing locations are available on our website as a resource to students.
- Students who have not received confirmation of their proctoring appointment with SDS at least 7 days in advance of their exam/quiz, or who have questions about the testing arrangements for their upcoming exam/quiz should contact proctor@uchicago.edu immediately for assistance.

New Accessibility Tools Available |
UChicago now has access to Grackle for Google Workspace and Sensus Access within Canvas. Grackle is an add-on to the UChicago Google Workspace that can be used to create more accessible Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Simply launch the tool from the Extensions menu to run an accessibility check of your document.
SensusAccess is now integrated in Canvas. Simply click the “S” icon across from a content item in Canvas, and a dialog box will open, allowing you to convert the content item into an accessible file format of your choice for email or download.
To find out more about Grackle, please see the Center for Digital Accessibility’s information page on Grackle. To find out more about SensusAccess, please see Academic Technology Solution’s Knowledge Base article on using SensusAccess in Canvas.

College Students Transitioning to UChicago Grad |
If you’re a student who attended the College and are now transitioning into a UChicago graduate/professional program, and you would like to continue using accommodations, please contact your assigned SDS director to receive guidance on the new process of implementing accommodations in your graduate/professional program.

Emergency Evacuation for Persons with Disabilities |
The University recognizes that individuals with disabilities may require assistance with alerting, evacuating, and sheltering in the event of an emergency. The University therefore asks all individuals who may need assistance in an emergency to self-identify themselves. Once an individual has self-identified, Environmental Health and Safety will work with the individual to develop a personal emergency plan that includes specific evacuation procedures, sheltering procedures, and means of communication in the event of an emergency.
To learn more about emergency procedures for persons with disabilities, please visit the university's evacuation page.
