Nebraska Legislature in Session - Bill to Support Culture Introduced
The Nebraska Legislature is now in session. We are working on several issues to enhance the arts in Nebraska.
LB224 was introduced by Senator Joni Albrecht. This bill would allow cultural organizations to obtain lower-interest bond financing for capital projects. This type of financing is already available to private universities, nonprofit hospitals, and social service agencies in the state and is a tool available to cultural organizations in at least ten other states.
Other bills/issues with an impact on the arts include:
Public Funding Match for the Nebraska Cultural Endowment (NCE).  We will be advocating for the $500,000 public match from state appropriations for NCE. The Governor has not placed this match into his budget for the second time, but it is important for the NCE in order to raise private matching funds to support grants programs at the Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska.
Art Therapist Licensing: A bill will be introduced for the licensing of art therapists with the Department of Health and Human Services.
Nebraska Arts Council Appropriation: We will be monitoring LB294, the state's appropriation bill to ensure funding of the Nebraska Arts Council budget for the next two years.
Arts Advocacy Day is the one day each year that arts advocates, organization leaders, and patrons come together to speak with our Nebraska legislators about the importance of supporting the arts and arts education in our state.
This year's events will be different due to renovations at the State Capitol. We will kick off activities in the Warner Chamber, across the Rotunda from Legislative Chamber.
9:00am - State Capitol Advocacy
The event starts at 9:00am with an opportunity to learn advocacy techniques from former state senators, receive issue briefs from current senators, and chances to meet with your state senator.
Next, we move across the street to the 1526 Building for several presentations and training sessions:
11:00am - Lunch & Networking with your Collegues
Noon - Creative Coalitions: Lessons from the Field
1:00pm - Arts Accessibility
After our event, get your grant skills tuned up with the following session offered by the Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska:
2:00pm - Grants Information Session with the Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska
Registration for this workshop is highly recommended, but not required. RSVP to: nac.grants@nebraska.gov
