Children are exposed to potentially traumatic events at increasingly high rates given increases in natural disasters and due to COVID-19 related stressors. Children who were once perhaps only “in-risk” are now experiencing high levels of distress that cannot be remediated quickly or by receiving support from one type of service alone. The good news? Erin Hambrick (Psychology) is on the case. She is currently working with the School Mental Health Initiative in Kansas to help improve cross-system collaboration (e.g., among schools, community mental health centers, juvenile justice systems, and other child-serving systems), and to increase the trauma-responsiveness of behavioral health services. Their goal is to streamline highly effective and intensive outpatient care services for children and families to allow more children to have success in school.
