April is Financial Literacy Month and it’s our favorite month of the year because we get to celebrate everything that promotes the importance of understanding how finances impact our lives. The National Endowment for Financial Education, NEFE, brought this concept to the Jump$tart Coalition to promote among its partners.

Today, organizations nationwide conduct events and initiatives to promote the importance of financial literacy and the need for effective financial education. The entire month is devoted to understanding personal money management and making smart decisions that help us meet our financial goals. The 2024 theme is to inform, inspire and ignite financial empowerment by supporting educators and parents in teaching young people about money management and gaining financial independence.

Equitable access to financial literacy classes ensures economic empowerment for all students. By equipping young minds with the tools to understand and navigate the financial world, we're setting them up for success in all aspects of life. This movement calls for school and parent involvement and a commitment to ensuring that every child has the chance to learn these essential skills. See how your school fares in providing this financial education at CheckYourSchool.org.

When students graduate with a strong understanding of money management and financial independence, they get a head start on adulting. Understanding the complexities of personal finance and equipping teachers with the training to prioritize this critical learning is the key to making financial education a necessity, not a luxury. Parents, communities and educators can advocate for comprehensive and effective financial education in every K-12 curriculum. Parents can help by communicating directly with their children’s schools to ask for an effective personal finance curriculum. Resources from CheckYourSchool.org provide sample emails, talking points and social media posts to advocate for and ensure children get the effective financial education they need to prosper.

Learning is the foundation of financial equality and confidence, and teachers ignite a lifelong learning mindset. Every child deserves the chance to build a solid foundation for their financial future. We can equip students with personal finance skills by supporting their teachers with resources, curricula and training.
