Teaching with Final Rounds
Our final rounds are one of our most popular resources with students. Refresh your instruction with new videos—or plan a practice in which students watch a final round and take notes on what competitors do well. Then, have them apply those strategies to their own performances.
Sample Activity » In this activity from NSDA coach Leeann Solice, students watch final round performances, adjudicate, and provide feedback or analysis for each performer. You can make a copy of this activity for a single performance or with ranks and feedback for a round of up to eight competitors.

Celebrate March Madness with an Impact Calculus Tournament
While NCAA basketball teams gear up to compete in their tournament, your NSDA students can, too! Use this lesson from Start Here: Teaching Policy Debate to hold an Impact Calculus Tournament for your debaters. On day one, students learn about comparing impacts and formulate their arguments. On day two, the tournament begins! Students deliver short (30-second to one-minute) speeches on their advantages or disadvantages, comparing their impact to their opponents’ impact. Students should address magnitude, probability, and timeframe. Impact turns are fair game! Either have the team vote on a winner or make a decision on your own.
This full lesson and tips for assessment are included in Lesson 10 of the Policy Start Here collection. A similar version with more preparation time for younger students is included in Lesson 10 of Start Here: Teaching Middle School Public Forum. Game on!

Recognize Students with NSDA Honor Cords
NSDA students are eligible to wear honor cords at graduation and induction ceremonies. Honor cords demonstrate membership in our Honor Society and, for many, the opportunity to wear them is an enticing part of membership.
School policies vary—check with your admin about whether your students can wear honor cords, and share our letter to help make the case.
