We can never give up. The pandemic has tested our resilience as an industry and as an association. Thanks to the support of members worldwide, and the unshakeable belief in the value of our ATM businesses and services which are provided daily to millions of accountholders, we’ve continued to recover from the initial losses of lockdown, whilst building our future with the global launch of ATM 2.0, an API App model for future-proof ATMs.
Meanwhile, cash is bouncing back, with cashless retail bans spreading like wildfire this year across states and cities of America, in a wave of bipartisan support, while I’m participating weekly in various working groups of the European Savings and Retail Banking Group’s investigation into ensuring access to cash for citizens of the Eurosystem. In my considered view, it’s mainly monopolies, authoritarian governments and the historically short-sighted who are blindly pursuing the misguided vision of a cashless society. Those who believe in human freedom, believe in the freedom to choose, too, including the choice of using cash for payments, budgeting in the home and as a store of value. ATMIA will always be a friend of freedom, including the freedom of payment choice. We are friends of the ATM and of the cash, and its value-added services, it can provide 24 x 7. ATMs represent one of the most successful technologies of the modern era.
The roll-out of vaccines provides additional hope for an end to this tragic health and economic crisis. Our industry is ready to hit the ground running, as the post-pandemic world slowly, but surely, begins to emerge.

Launch of Next Gen ATM System Inaugurates Global Race to Reinvent ATMs
The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) launched the official global certification system for Next Gen ATMs, the culmination of a four-year long industry project to create a new API App model for ATMs, integrating ATMs and mobile phones in one seamless new ecosystem.
“I’m proud and delighted to announce that the Consortium for Next Gen ATMs, made up of over 400 participating companies in 55 countries, working together since 2017, has created a brand new global architecture for app-based ATMs,” said Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA, Chairperson of the Consortium for Next Gen ATMs and President of the ATM Security Association. “Now that the online certification system for the new architecture has gone live on the ATMIA Next Gen portal, companies from anywhere in the world can certify their ATM products and services as Next Gen ready and receive their association certification badge of approval.”

ATMIA Blog: ATMIA Publishes Next Gen ATM User Interface & Metrics
To mark the milestone of launching the online self-certification system for Next Gen ATMs, which enables customers to transact at ATMs via their mobile bank apps, ATMIA has published its global “Next Gen ATM User Interface and Metrics” best practices. The aim of the new industry manual is to guide ATM operators, vendors and service-providers to measure how to maximize the customer experience and interface at Next Gen ATMs.
The Next Gen ATM User Interface & Metrics report explains why the architecture of the Next Gen ATM blueprint, launched in November 2020, is geared to enhancing the future of ATM consumer experiences and outlines all the relevant factors to measure the improvement of the user interface (UI).
