Deciphering NIH Grant Numbers
What exactly do each of those numbers in an NIH grant represent?  Some of these numbers change each year (like the application type and support year) while other items remain the same (activity code, IC, serial number). This summary form shows the meaning behind each of the sections and why they are important.
Planning a proposal submission in the next 2-3 months?
In an effort to better serve you, the PMI grants team requests that PIs and Fellows notify us as far in advance as possible, of submission plans.  This ensures ample time to complete departmental requirements and also route to OSP for review, by their deadline.   For reference, here is our Grants Submission Timeline which includes key milemarkers, OSP deadlines, and corresponding action-items.
New NIH "FORMS-G" Grant Application Forms and Instructions Coming for Due Dates on or after January 25, 2022
Effective early next year, NIH is making more changes to their proposal form-set. Applicants submitting proposals on or after January 25, 2022, must utilize FORMS-G.
The changes to the form-set include:
  • Implementing the new UEI number to replace the DUNS number
  • Requiring Commons IDs for all KSP
  • Applying Biosketch and Other Support changes

eRA Commons two-factor authentication
NIH is providing more time to make the transition to Login.gov.  eRA will begin a phased approach for enforcing the two-factor authentication requirement for the recipient community (both scientific and administrative account holders).  Scientific account holders should take action now, while administrative account holders will be required to move to two-factor authentication by early 2022.
CoeusWeb For Final Submissions
OSP developed a tool within the CoeusWeb application to submit proposals directly to grants.gov.  This is in addition to the traditional method using Coeus Premium.  OSP created a short PDF guide including screenshots, of what the PI will see during the process. The grants team will continue to be available to support PIs during the final approval and submission.
Know the Basics of NIH Review Criteria
NIH provides peer reviewers with instructions to guide their assessments of grant applications. NIH does so to help reviewers provide consistent evaluations by examining the same key aspects of all applications they review. This recently released NIH article discusses key components of the review process including: overall impact score, scored review criteria, additional review considerations, and nonresponsiveness.
