Student employees in the Division of Student Experience gathered in August for training led by Eddie Howard, Vice President for Student Affairs.
“Our students really are the heart of the Student Experience division,” said Howard.
During training, student employees learned about issues related to customer service, divisional goals, and institutional priorities, as well as the Division’s mission and core values.
Core values include: belonging, inclusion, integrity, autonomy, respect, passion, and service.
Students were also educated about key people on campus, what these individuals do, and where their offices are located. They completed a team building exercise in which they were asked to develop strategies to live out the department’s core values in their lives and at work.
Some notable strategies students came up with to move the department forward, with the core values in mind, are:
Belonging: Share a warm smile, learn people’s names, use resources provided by YSU and share these with others
Inclusion: Talk to everyone not just your close friends, talk to students that come through the department and get to know them, connect students to organizations, events, staff, and resources that will best suit them
Integrity: Encourage people to do the right thing, hold your friends and coworkers to a higher standard, be a role model, always give 100%
Autonomy: Help students develop healthy habits, friendships, and positive mindsets, teach students how to live on their own, work together to create a great student experience for all students
Respect: Be patient and talk out differences, treat everyone with dignity, encourage and trust others
Passion: Discuss interests of students, help students find a purpose, help students find things they love on campus – if it isn’t there, create it
Service: Do more than what is expected of you, be a friend not a resource, know where to find answers you may not know
