Traveling Between Cultures
Born in a multi-ethnic region of China, Yu Luo, Puget Sound’s Suzanne Wilson Barnett Chair in Contemporary China Studies and assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, didn’t realize how little she knew of her heritage until college. It was through her doctoral fieldwork in her home province that she noticed how unique her perspective could be as both an insider and outsider of her own culture. We talked with Luo about her research on China’s ethnic minority groups, what it’s like studying something so personal, and how her research translates to teaching.

Back-From-Break Testing
All students, faculty, and staff are required to complete COVID-19 gateway testing upon returning to campus following Thanksgiving break. You may test on campus using pooled-saliva testing by dropping off a test in Wheelock Student Center (across from Room 208) or participating in walk-through testing in Rasmussen Rotunda, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 29–Thursday, Dec. 2.

THE MEMORY OF WAR On Nov. 16, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen visited campus to deliver the fall 2021 Susan Resneck Pierce Lecture in Public Affairs and the Arts. In addition to the lecture, Nguyen spoke with students in Prof. Nancy Bristow’s U.S. and the War in Vietnam history class and discussed the blurry line between fiction, nonfiction, and memoir with interdisciplinary faculty members in a seminar hosted by Professors Priti Joshi and Monica DeHart.
