OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT IN DUBOCE PARK AUGUST 23 – BEST IN SHOW
Outdoor movie night returns to Duboce Park on Thursday, August 23 with Best in Show, a 2000 mockumentary film that offers a look into the highly competitive and cut-throat world of dog shows through the eyes of a group of ruthless dog owners. The movie won 11 awards, including AFI Movie of the Year and received 14 other nominations in a variety of categories.
The movie is part of Sundown Cinema, a series of free movies that will be shown in San Francisco parks on Thursdays. The event is sponsored by San Francisco Parks Alliance, DoTheBay, and Alamo Drafthouse and is hosted by Friends of Duboce Park. Expect food, drinks, music, and neighborhood fun. Food trucks open at 6pm; the film screening will start after sunset.
Other movies, locations, and dates of Sundown Cinema include: Conservatory of Flowers, June 28, Little Shop of Horrors; Alamo Square, June 26, Mrs. Doubtfire; and, Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park, September 28, Grease.
Guests are encouraged to walk, bicycle or take public transportation to all Sundown Cinema park screenings. It can get chilly out there, so bring blankets and cozy clothes to keep warm. Please pack out what you pack in.

BASKETBALL COURT TO GET NEW SURFACE IN FALL
Duboce Park’s heavily-used basketball court will be resurfaced sometime this fall, according to Dennis Kern, Director of Operations for Rec and Park. The court is now at the top of the queue and will be the next city park basketball court to be resurfaced. Besides being used by the After School Enrichment Program (ASEP), Summer Camp, and skateboarding classes, the court receives plenty of regular use from local hoopsters. Two of the six baskets are only eight feet high, which is two feet lower than standard, and are very popular with younger, smaller users.

JULY VOLUNTEER DAY JULY 14
Our next volunteer day is Saturday, July 14, 10 a.m.-noon. Our June volunteer day was cancelled due to a shortage of Rec & Park gardeners that day available to supervise and because of Pride activities. Past volunteer efforts in the park in the past year have resulted in numerous colorful planted areas – the planting circle near the Pierce Street steps, the planting triangle between the basketball court and the playground, and the Scott Street planting beds in front of the Recreation Center. You can join the Friends of Duboce Park at our next volunteer day this Saturday, July 14 from 10 a.m.-noon. Our volunteer day is always the second Saturday of every month. 30 minutes or an hour of your time makes a big difference in the appearance of our park. Volunteers gave more than 203,000 hours of their time and energy to improving our 225 parks and recreation facilities in 2017. Those hours are equal to $6 million in park services.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AUGUST 7 For the third year in a row, Park Station will host National Night Out (NNO) for the Duboce Triangle and the Park District in the Harvey Milk Photo Center Exhibition Room and the upper lawn area and patio just outside the room. SFPD is sponsoring the annual NNO Against Crime event in San Francisco from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, and all San Francisco police stations are participating.
NNO is the country’s united effort to promote neighborhood involvement to help stem crime and create safer neighborhoods. This is accomplished through strengthening police-community relations and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie by hosting neighborhood events such as NNO.
The free event is free and will have food and entertainment. There will be activities for children, arts and crafts area, martial art and karate demonstrations, specialized police and fire department vehicles, community and safety resource information tables, and the Xian Yn Academy of the Arts will demonstrate Chinese dancing.
This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with the officers from Park Station who patrol the Duboce Triangle and Duboce Park. They have been very responsive to our concerns and we now have a dedicated foot patrol that goes through the park on a regular basis.

21ST ANNUAL TAG SALE SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8
Start gathering your donations, our 21th Annual Tag Sale is Saturday, September 8, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Join the fun, socialize with your neighbors, and find bargains you just can’t resist.
The proceeds of our tag sales helps pay for improvements to Duboce Park. Last year, Tag Sale funds were used to pay for lighting fixtures in the dark alley on the west side of the Center, between Carmelita and Scott streets. The year before, the Tag Sale paid for a fresh coat of paint for the equipment in the playground and replaced two rusting slides in the playground.
We will start collecting donations on Tuesday, September 4, the day after Labor Day. Here’s a short list of items that can be donated: books, videos, clothes, linens, kitchen items, baskets, decorative, seasonal, sporting goods, toys, collectibles, and more. Furniture will not be accepted.
Unfortunately, there are items that we cannot accept because Goodwill will not accept them (we take our leftover items there) and no one else wants them: furniture; items that are stained, torn, or broken; large appliances (washers, dishwashers, refrigerators); small non-working appliances (microwaves, toasters); non-working electronics; non-digital TVs, non-flat screen TVs; baby cribs; bed pillows, mattresses and water beds; snow skis; oil-based cleaning supplies, paints and thinners; computers, peripherals, and manuals; auto parts and tires; sinks and showers; piping; water heaters; bath tubs; stained carpets; and, infant and baby car seats.
This event is always fun for the whole family and there are always irresistible bargains. Save the date and plan on participating in the fun! LGBTQ PHOTO EXHIBIT CONTINUES
The 2018 LGBTQ Exhibit Event, Art + Pride photo exhibit opened on June 16 and continues through July 22. This Art and Pride Exhibit is an eclectic gathering of work by notable contemporary artists from across the United States. The show is a celebration of their embrace of the creative process and each contributed work they felt resonated with the complexity of their artistic spirit. The show includes photographers, painters, sculptors, filmmakers, illustrators, writers, graphic designers, textile artists and poets.

The Annual Staff, Members & Volunteers Exhibit’s Opening Reception on Saturday August 4, 1-4 p.m. offers a current look at what is being created in the darkrooms and digital labs at the Harvey Milk Photo Center by their staff members and volunteers. This exciting exhibit has been curated by staff members and volunteers and encompasses a wide and exciting subject matter, including Wet Plate Photography, Film, Alternative Process, and Digital Imagery.
Participants will be asked to frame their work and deliver it to the center two weeks prior to the opening. There is no theme, just your best/favorite works produced in the past year, ideally at the Photo Center. Email hmpcsummershow@gmail.com if you would like to participate. COMPELLING DYNAMIC PORTRAITS PHOTO CLASS
What makes a portrait compelling and dynamic? Above all, it’s about developing your own unique way of seeing. Compelling Dynamic Portraits, starting on Saturday July 14, offers the opportunity to work in different surroundings and situations. Students will work with each other as models to explore the many levels of portraiture in black and white and in color.
Students will observe the essence of environment and subject through composition, metaphor and relationships using natural light and flash as fill in light. The final class will meet at the Photo Center to look at and critique work. All photographs must be printed out and ready for presentation. Students need to know how their cameras operate and camera functions, such as f-stops, shutter speeds, and ISO.
Camera proficiency is required. Equipment to bring: flash and lenses, SLR or DSLR camera. Please, no point-and-shoot camera or iPhones. Wear good walking shoes, bring water and a bite to eat.

MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Signs reminding dog owners that “No Dogs on This Lawn Area” and “This Area is for People Only Play” remain around the grassy area at the top end of the park in an effort to keep that area free of dog urine and feces so that people and children can play and picnic without worrying about stepping or falling into dog waste. Graffiti remains a problem in the park, but Rec & Park almost always removes it within a day or two of being notified. Most recently the north wall of the Harvey Milk Center, the drinking fountain near the Muni stop, and the stools at the Scott Street Labyrinth were tagged but the graffiti was removed almost immediately.

The most heavily used sections of the Dog Play Area are once again turning brown and bare, specifically the edge of the lawn near the Potomac Street benches and a few worn sections in the middle of the DPA. Rec & Park has tried a number of times recently to fix the problem by fencing off those areas and putting in new sod and/or adding new dirt and seed. Heavy use adversely affects those areas, especially during the dry months of the year.

Sunset Garden, in partnership with the San Francisco Botanical Garden, will once again bring over a dozen grand pianos to the spectacular Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park for Flower Piano IV, July 5-16. Pianos are placed in beautiful garden settings for anyone to play, with performances by brilliant local musicians scheduled on weekends. Special Night Garden Piano on July 12, 13, and 14. Free concerts continue every Sunday at 2 p.m. in Sigmund Stern Grove at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard. Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar, who has received five GRAMMY award nominations, and Filipina-Canadian rapper Han Han, who raps about her immigrant experience, are the featured performers. This is Han’s U.S. debut and will feature a new work in collaboration with the local Barangay Dance Company and DJ/producer Gingee. The San Francisco Symphony plays on July 22 and the San Francisco Symphony perfoms on July 22. AfroBeat legend Femi Kuti and local group Sol Development play on August 5.

The lineup for the 2018 Outside Lands Music and Arts festival in Golden Gate Park has been released and headliners include the Weekend, Florence + the Machine, Janet Jackson, Beck and more! The Golden Gate Park Band continues its 136th season every Sunday through October 1 at 1 p.m. at the Music Concourse. Singers, guest performers and speakers will offer perspective as the band plays music from different cultures. This Sunday, July 15, features Freench music; July 22, Concert Band Classics; and July 29, the Magic of Disney. The concerts are free.

Tunnel Tops, the area above the Presidio Parkway and just below the former Army’s Main Post, will become a park expected to open in early 2021. the size of Dolores Park, the Tunnel Tops will sit between Crissy Field and the Main Post and is expected to become one of the Presidio’s most-visited attractions. In addition to open space, the park will also have a youth education center with an four acres of the bottom of the bluff. The project will be funded through a $100 million fundraising campaign: $10 million from the Trust and $90 million from philanthropic sources.

The Golden Gate Park Golf Course clubhouse, built in 1951 and located near the 47th Avenue entrance on Clement Street was destroyed in a fire on July 2. No one was injured in the blaze. So far this year, 35,000 rounds of golf have been played at the 10-acre course. Rec and Park is in the process of considering closing JFK Drive to cars on Saturdays year-round rather than just from April to September. JFK is already closed on Sundays all year long. At issue is the number of parking spaces that will be lost. Visitors could still leave their car in the 800-space Music Concourse Garage, as well as approximately 3,5000 places around the perimeter. Closing JFK Drive would eliminate 284 parking spots on weekends.
