We are pleased to announce the release of the Paul Sauer 2018 vintage, available now through our online store. Orders can be placed now, and will be shipped as soon as the current Level 4 lockdown alcohol ban has been lifted.

When we are allowed to host tastings again, we would like to invite you to visit us in our cellar door to taste the new Paul Sauer vintage, as well as the full range of our other wines, and a few vintage hidden gems. More details on this to follow.

For the past two weeks our Wine Club members had the exclusive opportunity to make a pre-release purchase online, and as of today, all our wine friends will be able to purchase this highly anticipated release, but it will be limited to 6 x 750ml and 1 x 1.5L magnum per person only.

Kindly note that due to the limited availability of this wine, we will accept only one transaction per user, and that multiple purchases from the same user will not be processed.

The online store will only allow you to purchase a maximum of 6 bottles - thereafter the product will no longer be visible as part of the assortment.

Please allow 4 - 5 business days for delivery once the alcohol ban has been lifted.

Wine Club members will only be able to buy a maximum of 12 bottles (including their pre-release offer).

Paul Sauer - The Wine

It was under the watch of legendary winemaker Beyers Truter that Kanonkop’s iconic wine, the Paul Sauer Bordeaux-style blend, was introduced, a wine generally regarded as South Africa’s finest red wine

The first vintage was 1981, and naming the wine Paul Sauer after the farm’s patriarch was a given, as was the fact that the red blend would largely rely on Cabernet Sauvignon, with components of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The vineyards are a combination of dry-land and supplemental irrigation, with an average age of close to 30 years. Blending of the three different components takes place prior to barrel maturation to facilitate greater coherence between the parts.

The saturated ruby colour is complimented by an array of scents typically associated with Paul Sauer – fresh herbs, tilled earth, pencil shavings, spice, red- and black fruits. While being heady and perfumed, the wine remains classic and refined, with an utterly elegant structure. The tannins are precise, and together with the clever use of new oak, creates the perfect backdrop to host the complex fruit spectrum. The finish is sappy and spicy, with layered notes of red fruits and cured meats on the long, youthful finish.

Wine Spectator Ratings

Senior editor Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator's leading taster on the wines of South Africa, recently wrote that Cape Vintners are charting their own course. "Nearly 30 years have passed since the end of apartheid, and in that time South Africa's wine producers have established an identity unlike anywhere else."

To be mentioned on the list for Recommended Wines From South Africa is no mean feat, as more than 250 wines were reviewed for this report.

The Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2017 was rated 93 points in the Top Wines list, while our Kadette Cape Blend 2018 scored 88 points in the Top Values list.
