Dear Member,
Our industry is fighting back strongly against the pandemic. Frontline staff kept ATMs operational and supplied with cash throughout and we salute them. Meanwhile, ATMIA and our members fought and won the global PR battle against the anti-cash lobby who mischievously singled out cash as a vector of transmission. Then ATM transaction volumes started to rise again. Innovators in our industry then brought out technologies and signage to reassure customers we were doing everything we could to maintain safe usage of our terminals during the pandemic. We are developing a new global protocol for ATM hygiene which will be signed off within weeks. I believe the global ATM industry has shown commendable maturity, courage and resilience in dealing with the immense economic and public health challenges being faced. But that’s not all.

ATMIA’s Consortium for Next Gen ATMs is growing robustly as the industry rallies together to future-proof our technology for a new generation through the blueprint for an API App model for ATMs. 369 companies from 54 countries are participating in the project, which is on track to deliver the world’s first certified Next Gen ATM by early in Q4.

Be proud and strong – our industry is rising again. Thank you for your support of ATMIA; I  assure you that you won’t ever be sorry for coming on a journey with us through the crisis and into a positive future, together.

Warmest regards,

Mike Lee

“Typically, we only extend this offer once a year,” said ATMIA Global Director of Member Services Sharon Lane. “But this is certainly not shaping up to be a ‘typical’ year and we wanted to do something to provide extra support to members.”

Next Gen ATMs on track to deliver to the industry the first certified Next Gen ATM

The big news about Next Gen ATMs is that this future-proofing project is on track to deliver to the industry the first certified Next Gen ATM in Q4, turning the blueprint of a future API App model for ATMs into a physical reality everyone can see and touch. A technology-based industry like ours cannot afford to fall behind the curve. Instead, we’ve come together as an industry, across all its sectors, working hard since 2017 to turn this transformational vision into reality. The online self-certification system is being built and we have 10 companies pre-registered, readying themselves to certify their Next Gen ATM products and services by meeting all the specifications in the blueprint and approved Implementation Guide.

The Next Gen ATM architecture is very flexible and agile, containing a healthy mix of standard interfaces, vendor-specific interfaces and provider-specific interfaces. It is designed to enable the deployer to own and enrich the ATM customer experience, providing for fast, seamless service for a new generation of users.

Kaspersky uncovers new targeted campaign against financial and military organizations in Eastern Europe

Using Kaspersky Threat Attribution Engine, Kaspersky researchers were able to link more than 300 samples of a backdoor called Bisonal to a campaign by the advanced persistent threat actor (APT) CactusPete, a cyberespionage group active since at least 2012. This latest campaign has focused on military and financial targets in Eastern Europe and highlights the group’s rapid development.
CactusPete, also known as Karma Panda or Tonto Team, is a cyberespionage group that has been active since at least 2012. This time, they’ve upgraded their backdoor to target organization in the military and financial sectors in Eastern Europe, most likely in an effort to gain access to confidential information. The speed at which the new malware samples are being created suggest the group is rapidly developing. Organizations in the region should be on alert.

5 ways access control can transform business operations

A major shift is taking place in the way companies and organisations operate: the way they use their buildings and manage their people.

This transformation is being driven by a combination of external pressures, including the rapid impact of the 2020 pandemic, and longer term trends that were already established, such as the need to cut carbon emissions, manage increasingly mobile and remote staff and contractors, and adapt to the rise of disruptive online business models.

These pressures are now making it vital for organisations operate more safely, more hygienically and less wastefully than in the past.

The 2020 International IAD (Independent ATM Deployer) Study for Africa paints a big picture of opportunities for retail ATM deployment across varying emerging markets on the big African continent. It is the latest research report in ATMIA’s global series of IAD studies.

The content is both deep-diving and wide-ranging, covering key economic and financial services indicators like GDP, inflation, banked population, bank data, ATM, cash use, and digital money use data, as well as social factors which impact on opportunities for future investments in ATM deployment, such as population size, urbanization rates, literacy rates, corruption, governance and political conflict issues, and even environmental considerations. But the data sets across multiple countries don’t overwhelm the reader because the author blends them seamlessly into a well-narrated analysis.
