| Financial Literacy Standards at a Glance |
OKMM now offers Personal Financial Literacy (PFL) modules designed to support students and educators in meeting all 14 state-mandated financial literacy standards. These targeted modules include a built-in quiz that enables students to demonstrate their understanding of the content while fulfilling their high school graduation requirement.
Each edition of our newsletter will feature two PFL modules. This month’s focus highlights Earning an Income and State and Federal Taxes.
The Earning an Income module introduces students to the foundational role income plays in meeting basic needs, achieving personal goals, and supporting long‑term financial independence. The module also emphasizes the importance of budgeting as a tool for managing income, setting spending limits, and prioritizing financial objectives.
Within this module, students explore key concepts, including:
- How financial decisions require weighing costs and benefits, and how career choices, income potential, and entrepreneurship influence an individual’s ability to achieve personal and financial goals.
- Human capital, including education, skills, training and initiative, plays a critical role in shaping early earning potential and long‑term financial success.
-
Budgeting and spending plans help individuals manage income, track expenses, and make informed decisions that support both short‑ and long‑term goals.
The State and Federal Taxes module provides students with an understanding of the purpose of taxation and its role in supporting communities and government operations at the local, state, and federal levels. Students learn how tax revenue funds essential public goods and services, such as schools, transportation infrastructure, public safety, and other programs that benefit individuals and society as a whole.
The module also addresses the importance of meeting tax obligations and explains the potential consequences of failing to do so, including penalties, additional fees, and legal repercussions. Through this instruction, students gain a better understanding of their responsibilities as taxpayers and their role in contributing to a functioning society.
In addition, the module explains how common tax forms work together in the filing process. Students are introduced to the W‑2, W‑4, and the 1040 form, learning the purpose of each and how they are used to file a federal tax return.
To access all 14 PFL modules, visit the High School Students section on the OklahomaMoneyMatters.org website. Students are encouraged to read each standard and take the interactive quiz at the end of the lesson. Quiz results can be emailed directly to their counselor or instructor afterwards.
