The Spirit of Giving Comes to Elysian

Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.

Lao Tzu

This past holiday season our Elysian families came together to support some in our community who were seriously in need and to say thank you to others who go overboard to help us on a daily basis.  Every year a quiet collection of money occurs amongst the staff to support Elysian families who are down on their luck during the holiday season.  This year that collection was expanded to include the money raised by the PTSO fundraiser, The Coin Challenge.  An amazing $2700 was distributed to the families of 32 of our own students.  One parent said that she has been out of work for six months, had a family member in the hospital and didn’t know how she was going to have money to celebrate the holidays with her children.  She was about to call upon her sister for help, when she received the call telling her about Elysian’s support.  Her tears and warm thanks said it all.
Since our move to the new building, some of the most appreciated people in our new community are the wonderful crossing guards (technically they are actually traffic control officers, which gives them more authority over traffic).  Somewhere around fifth grade most children begin to move around the neighborhood on their own.  Streets such as 14th and 15th Streets, with car rushing to make the next light or turning from one major street onto another with complicated configurations of the traffic lights, are scary for most children and their parents.  No matter the weather—heat or cold, rain or snow—these officers are reliably at their posts, guiding both the traffic and the pedestrians.  They are always friendly and helpful to both children and adults and provide a safe passage across very busy streets.  A group of children, led by one of their parents, took up a collection to express the school’s appreciation for all that they do for us.  Our community donated over $1,000 as a thank you.  One of the children was carrying home the decorated bucket that she had used to collect money.  A woman on the street—with no connection to Elysian—stopped her to ask the purpose of the collection. When she found out it was the crossing guards, she pulled out a $20 bill because she so appreciated these folks.
Of course the children love the holidays, the warm family feelings and the presents.  But our children have learned the joy of saying thank you to those who help or giving to those who are in need.
Have a wonderful new year!

MORE COIN CHALLENGE THANK YOUS! The PTSO would like to thank Sara Green for all of her hard work with the coin challenge. What a success! We raised more than $2,500 for families in need. Congrats again to the fourth grade, kindergarten and third grade for their amazing efforts. And, thank you to all for your participation. Everyone should be proud of their efforts. Last, thanks to Diane Sasso for letting the PTSO join in her efforts to help out our community during the holiday season!

Notice To All Families With A Kindergarten Sibling For Next Year

Earlier this week, confirming emails were sent out to verify receipt of Elysian sibling applications. You do not have to respond to this email.  It is to verify to you that Elysian has your application and you are guaranteed a spot.  If there is any family who has NOT sent in your application for Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year, we ask that you do so now.

The deadline for all applications is Jan. 9, at 5:00 pm. If your sibling application is not in by this time, we cannot guarantee placement for the following year.

We need to know how many spots are available to families who are participating in the lottery. Knowing ahead of the cutoff date will allow us to plan for spots available to the public.

Please turn in all applications to Susan Gilbertson.  You can hand applications into the office or email Susan at: susan.gilbertson@escnj.org
