Best Practices to Teach Remotely

This past week we had a reminder that inclement weather or other emergencies can happen and we should be ready to teach classes remotely. If you have not yet taken a look at the Canvas Instructor Guides, become familiar with those. Other things to consider:

Be proactive and prepare some activities your students could do any week
Communicate with your students about any changes
Do not take student attendance
Be flexible on assignments and due dates

High-Impact College Teaching Tips

The Hub has a new document with resources for teaching college courses that improve student engagement, persistence rate and retention.

How to Answer Students' Questions Effectively?

When students ask questions in your class, they want clear and direct answers. Unfortunately, what is clear to you might not be clear enough to them and this is a topic that often appears in student feedback sessions. To answer:

Listen carefully to what the student is asking
Think for a second, what is the most relevant information
Avoid ambiguous language and unnecessary information
Do not give them a very long answer

Consider giving your students question prompts to help them ask better questions (i.e., higher order thinking vs lower order thinking, etc). Encourage students to ask questions in class.Read Five Strategies for Mastering the Art of Answering Questions.

Zine for Students as Partners (ZAP)

ZAP is a participatory project that highlights the collaborative work of faculty and students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Zine publishes a wide variety of content produced by faculty, staff, and students, prioritizing collaborations between them. This includes, but is not limited to: academic papers, comics, creative writing, essays, infographics, and op eds.

Call for Submissions is now open through Monday, March 13th. For more details visit the full call on the ZAP website.
