Psalm 86:11
Teach me your way, Lord,
    that I may rely on your faithfulness;
give me an undivided heart,
    that I may fear your name.
New International Version (NIV)
                  How long can you go telling God about who he is to you?  Would the conversation be measured in seconds, minutes, hours or days?  When we know a person, it is not hard to talk to them or about them.  What if our struggle to talk to and about God reveals that we don't know him as well as we could or should?

                David knew the Lord on a better than second-hand basis.  His prayer in this psalm reveals at least two things God can do for us right now.  First he can teach you his way.  This is important for people like us who are bent on having our way.  Again C. S., Lewis wrote that there are only two kinds of people:  those who pray, "Your will be done," and those to whom God says, "Alright then, have it your way."  What if we sought his way, today?  How would that disrupt our calendars and bank accounts?  What would we gain?  Everything!  To go his way is to rely on his faithfulness.  If all we knew about God was his faithfulness, we could fill our days talking to him and about him.  But there is more.

                Second, God not only teaches us, but he gives us an undivided heart.  God is exclusively worthy of our heart's affection and our mind's attention.  What in the world is worthy to compete with God for our attention and affection?  How quickly we give away the love which should be reserved for God alone.  Let us not be double-minded and divided in our commitment to Christ today.  Sports fail as a substitute for God.  We are entertaining ourselves to death.  Work must not usurp God's unique position as most important in our lives.  Money is a poor substitute.  False gods never fail to fail.  Are we undivided or undecided?   Decide to ask God for an undivided heart.  Be ready for his answer!

Pray with me:
Father, we confess our feet are so often firmly planted in mid-air.  On the one hand we want to love you with all our hearts, souls, minds and strength.  On the other hand, other loves in our lives emerge and try to take your place.  God be first and central in our thoughts and affections today.  Take your rightful place.  We love you first and best, only and always.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
