Psalm 146:5-9
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
    he remains faithful forever.
He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free,
the Lord gives sight to the blind,
the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the foreigner
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

New International Version (NIV)
Once we know God is our King, we are free to put our trust in him, not in earthly princes.  No earthly ruler can offer salvation.  As human beings, their lives are temporary, regardless of their rank.  Their plans perish with them (146:1-4).   We pray for our rulers but we do not put our trust in them.  Our trust is in God alone.

What would life under God’s rule resemble?  He is the ruler who keeps faith with his people.  He gives justice to the oppressed and feeds the hungry.  The Lord sets prisoners free and opens the eyes of the blind.  He lifts up the bowed down and loves the righteous.  He watches over the strangers among us.  He upholds the widow and fatherless.

One of my relatives confided in me that he had never really known his father.  He had no male influence in his life.  When he was eight, the grandfather who was raising him died.   This left him with a single mom who loved him well and served as dad and mom.  When our parents die, we may well feel like orphans.  Jesus said, “I will not leave you as orphans, but I will come to you." (John 14:18)  Our eternal King is also our loving heavenly Father.  His love will not let us go.  God is our help and our hope.
Pray with me:
Eternal King, loving Father, thank you for not leaving us as orphans.  Come to us in our woundedness and vulnerability.  Come to us in our bravado and self-confidence.  Come to us in our loneliness and hurt.  By all means come to us now so that we may rely on you and rest in you alone.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
