A Note from Hitinder Gurm
We hope you have had a wonderful summer! At the BMC2 Coordinating Center, we have been experiencing a season of growth as we welcomed our new Project Manager, Mary Casey. Mary will work with us to manage special projects, optimize efficiency, and maintain key operational processes within the consortium.
We are also preparing for a transition in leadership as Dr. Peter Henke steps down from his role as the Director of BMC2 Vascular Surgery. For 10 years, Dr. Henke has been a champion for cardiovascular patients, greatly impacting the trajectory of improvements in quality of care and outcomes in vascular patients across the State of Michigan through his superb guidance and expertise. We are so very grateful for the years of service that Dr. Henke has provided to BMC2 and are lucky he will continue participating in BMC2 in an ex officio capacity.
We are excited to welcome Dr. Nicholas Osborne as our next Director of BMC2 Vascular Surgery, effective January 1st. Dr. Osborne has been an active and engaged member of BMC2 and we look forward to continuing our mission of improving quality of care and outcomes under his care. You can learn more about Dr. Osborne in this issue’s Faculty Spotlight.
Our Patient Advisory Council has been integrated into the consortium and serves as a way for us to involve the patient perspective in improving the work that we do. We are still looking to expand this group in our commitment to diversity. If you have a patient to recommend to the council, you can contact the Coordinating Center. We are particularly interested in adding someone who experienced complications from their procedure and someone who underwent an elective PCI.
We look forward to seeing you both virtually and in person this fall and THANK YOU for your commitment to patients. The work that we all do together is making a difference each day.

Patient Spotlight - Hal Morgenstern
On the morning of Saturday, June 18, 2016, Hal Morgenstern sat up in bed to a sudden pain in his chest. Extreme perspiration and lightheadedness followed, and Hal’s wife called for an ambulance. Within an hour of the onset of his symptoms, Hal arrived at Michigan Medicine’s emergency department.
Hal’s diagnosis was a STEMI involving 100% occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. Another coronary artery was also occluded to a lesser extent.
In the cardiac catheterization lab, he had two drug-eluding stents placed in his LAD coronary artery. Continue reading to learn more about Hal's experience as a patient and Patient Advisory Council member on our blog.

This study by, Michael P. Thompson, PhD; Jessica M. Yaser, MPH; Annemarie Forrest, MS, MPH, RN; Steven J. Keteyian, PhD; and Devraj Sukul, MD, MS demonstrated the feasibility of creating a statewide collaboration of hospitals and CR facilities centered around the goal of equitably improving CR enrollment for all eligible patients in Michigan. The collaboration is supported by a multidisciplinary advisory group and performance benchmarking. Lessons learned in this study helped to result in the Michigan Cardiac Rehab (MiCR) Network. You can read more about this study at PubMed and learn more about MiCR on our website.

Opportunities for Participation
Free 1-1 Counseling Offered by Michigan OPEN - To support appropriate prescribing for vascular surgery patients, Michigan OPEN is offering BMC2 vascular surgeons the opportunity to participate in tailored, one-on-one counseling sessions. Sessions provide unbiased, evidence-based information about medications and prescribing. Participants will be compensated for their time. Learn more on our blog.
Imaging Educational Series - BMC2 seeks to create a library of archived cases to be used for training purposes. Do you have de-identified images to share? If so, this is an opportunity to contribute to BMC2’s ability to share and discuss ways to improve appropriate use of imaging during future meetings. This will lead to improved procedural and patient outcomes after PCI. Please contact the Coordinating Center if you have images or are interested in leading and participating in this initiative.
Patient Engagement at BMC2 - We are seeking additional patients that represent the diversity of our state to join our BMC2 PCI Patient Advisory Council. We are particularly interested in adding a patient who experienced complications as well as a patient who had a routine PCI to our team. Can you recommend a patient to this group? There is no up-front commitment and patients will be compensated for their time.
Send the patient’s name and contact info to Annemarie Forrest, avassalo@umich.edu; or Pam Benci, plf@umich.edu. You can learn more about patient responsibilities and what we are looking for in a patient advisor by visiting our blog.
