BLTN NextGen Youth Headline South Carolina Council of Teachers of English Conference |
|
|
Congratulations to Aiken youth, Kameron, Tiffany, and Morgan, along with Louisville's Jesse and Maria, for an evocative and inspiring keynote address at this weekend's South Carolina Conference of Teachers of English meeting. Young people from the two NextGen sites relayed their insights into inclusive teaching practices, drawing from personal stories. They then facilitated discussion based on writing prompts engaging teachers in reflection on how they "build bridges" with students. They received a standing ovation.
After the event, Morgan reflected, "Hearing how different teachers share how they build bridges with students gave me hope for the students of South Carolina." Kameron added, "Just hearing all the ways teachers are making efforts to have a connection with their students was absolutely wonderful. Also, being able to have a discussion about the policy changes that need to take place within the educational system was relieving because it felt good to know that teachers also see the problems and understand that they can be detrimental to their students."

BLTN Meeting Re-Cap: Professor Wandera on Immigrant Youth Literacies |
"Have you ever wondered about the strengths of your school/district/program in supporting immigrant students? We hear a lot about having an asset-oriented approach in teaching. What does that look like when it comes to supporting immigrant youth language and literacy practices? Which stakeholders need to be involved?"
On Thursday evening, January 12, Professor David Wandera (MA '08, MLitt '13) led a conversation about things we can do to support immigrant students and families. He led attendees on a brief but deep dive into cultural and heritage resources that immigrant youth bring to the classroom and some of the challenges they face. David concluded with some concrete takeaways and resources to extend learning about acculturative practices. Contact Tom McKenna for access to the recorded presentation.
