Nothing really replaces good family relationships.
Nothing really replaces good family relationships.

Matthew 12:48-50
He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”  Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.  For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
New International Version (NIV)
My recent visit with my brothers reminded me of the treasure we share in family.  Have you noticed how quickly we revert to our familiar roles?  After we packed the Hummels, my brother Dan and I were given the task of packing Mom's dolls.  Unforgettable laughter!  Suffice it to say my picture of him is permanent ammunition in my arsenal of family lore.
Nothing really replaces good family relationships.  Jesus' mother and brothers came to check on him.  Are we surprised he did not drop everything to go to them?  His words teach a valuable lesson.
We treasure our relationships in the Christian family.  In my early years as a pastor, godly brothers and sisters gave great wisdom.  They still do.  Older brothers and peers have prayed with me.  These days I take great joy in mentoring our younger ministers and members.  I look around at church and think, "here are my mother, father, brothers and sisters."  Unforgettable joy!
Pray with me:
Gracious Father, how we thank you for our families.  Help us to be present and accounted for at family events.  Deepen our love, too, for the body of Christ.  Help us to remain faithful, honoring you in all of our relationships.  In Jesus' name, Amen.
