Acts 16: 16 - 18
16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.

New International Version (NIV)
“Out of position.” The pastor who said those words is the same one who taught me to say, “God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.” He preached about David’s sin with Bathsheba. There in 2 Samuel 11:1, the writer says that David was home at the time of year when kings went off to war. He sinned, in part, because he was “out of position.” Had he been where he was supposed to be, he would have missed the events which led to his great sin and great pain.

Paul, Silas, Timothy, Luke, and the others in their party were not “out of position.” I just saw this. They didn’t stop going to the place of prayer. The church at Philippi started in a prayer meeting. Lydia hosted these missionaries in her home. But each day they still went to the place of prayer. Only jail kept them from the place of prayer.

Along the way, one day, they ran into a female slave who had a spirit which enabled her to predict the future. In so doing, she made her owners a lot of money. On this day, an evil spirit ran into the Holy Spirit. She recognized the servants of the Most High God telling people how to be saved. For many days, she continued to shout these true words about the apostles as they went to the place of prayer. One day, Paul put a stop to it by casting the demon out of her.

We might think that all hades would break loose when Paul opposed evil. It did for a minute, but then all heaven broke loose in that city. This makes me wonder, are we finding our way to the place of prayer, every day. If not, we are out of position. It is true that when we pray, we awaken opposition. But if we don’t pray, we never get to see God shake the world and change the lives of others. Get to the place where you pray, today. You’ll be glad you did and so will others. How do I know? Well because our God is good, all the time.

Pray with me:
Father, show us a place where we can pray every day. Help us to be diligent in this, for our sake and the sake of others. Let us be known as the people who pray. Then let us live up to our reputation. Let all heaven break loose in our world as we call upon you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
