The Link Between Competitive Sports and Women Executives
|
| |
There is no doubt about it: research shows that all-girls’ schools empower young women to be leaders, and when girls participate in competitive athletics, they are much more likely to serve in an executive-level position. According to a 2018 Ernst & Young study, a staggering, 94% of women who hold C-suite positions are former athletes, and 80% of the women leading Fortune 500 companies were competitive athletes. Achievement in the competitive, still largely male-dominated business world demands a level of intensity, confidence, and competition learned through sports. With their team-building and leadership skills, problem-solving capabilities, and experience with high levels of competition, “women who have played sports are uniquely positioned to lead in the corporate world.” -EY.com
The physical and mental health benefits of girls in sports are extensive. Girls who participate in athletics report higher levels of self-esteem and confidence, and they have a more positive body image. Sports and other forms of exercise have considerable health benefits, from reducing the risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis in women to lowering stress levels, providing a healthy outlet for girls to combat depression and other negative feelings. Through team sports, girls also learn the importance of teamwork and fair play, which will benefit them in the collegiate and corporate world.
The absence of a glass ceiling in a girls’ school environment not only encourages but expects students to speak their minds, to step up and take on leadership roles, and to discover their potential from a young age. When all the leaders around them are female, girls know there is nothing they cannot accomplish themselves. And when the future is female, the futures that start in girls’ schools shine even brighter. According to a national survey, 87% of girls’ school students feel their opinions are respected in school. This is a stark difference compared to only 58% of girls at coed schools.

Legacy of Excellence - Experience the Winning Culture at Notre Dame

|
At the Academy of Notre Dame, every leader, athlete, and artist is a girl. About 70% of students participate in at least one sport each year. Though many schools don't begin until grade 7, at Notre Dame, students can compete in Athletics in grade 6, allowing for greater opportunities to improve and enhance their skills and abilities. In exceptional cases, Middle School athletes are also able to compete at the Varsity level, allowing for greater competition and specialization.
Notre Dame’s athletic program promotes healthy competition in an environment of sportsmanship. Our teams consistently win Inter-Ac and PAISAA championships across all three seasons, with teams and players ranked nationally. The Varsity Field Hockey team is currently ranked 1st in the country by Max Field Hockey. The Varsity Cross Country team just won its third consecutive Inter-Ac title. The Varsity Volleyball team has won nine consecutive independent school state championships. The Middle School Basketball team went undefeated to win the CAL Championship in 2022-2023.
Dozens of ND alumnae are participating in collegiate athletics, including 15 from the Class of 2023 alone, continuing the strong foundation they learned on the Notre Dame fields, courts, and more. Notre Dame offers 15 sports - from traditional options like field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse to non-traditional sports like sailing, crew, and paddle tennis - providing ample opportunities for girls to try new sports or specialize in the sport of their choice. From the grade 6 swimmer to the student-athlete sailing at MIT, opportunities abound for the beginner and the highly competitive athlete at Notre Dame.
