April 2016
Dear Charter School Supporter,
Last week, we marked Louisiana Charter Schools Week by bringing together charter school parents, school leaders, board members, staff, and supporters to the Capitol in support of charter schools and parent choice in Louisiana. It was a critical week for us, as both the House Education Committee and the Senate Education Committee met to discuss charter school-related bills -- and many of these bills threatened the strength and health of the charter school landscape here in Louisiana.
Thanks to your support, none of the anti-charter bills proposed by either side made it out of committee. I want to recognize those of you who came out to the Capitol to show and voice your support to the legislators, along with those of you who contacted your legislator last week to ask them to stand with you in support of parent choice. Your voice is critical to the process, and it made a difference during these important committee meetings.
Our work continues, though, as the Legislature moves forward with session. Some anti-charter bills were deferred last week and will make its way back into committee at some point; we will also probably see some new bills filed throughout the next few months. Please get ready to answer our calls to action in the future -- we will need all of your support to ensure that our parents continue to have choices in public education.
Sincerely,
Caroline Roemer
