Program: Bilateral Academic Research Initiative (BARI) Program – Research Council of Finland (AKA)
NOFO #: HQ003424NFOEASD0
Synopsis: Supports high-risk basic research as an international collaboration. This research should attempt to provide the scientific foundation for the design and development of future and ubiquitous information networks that rely on extreme-scale devices, distributed intelligence, and network complexity, and include cognitive and social concepts to inform technological choices. The goal of this program is to produce significant scientific breakthroughs and knowledge that will be critical steps in enabling revolutions in communication and information technology on a large scale. Proposals focused on specific devices, network architectures, or components already at or past the design stage are beyond the scope of this NOFO. A single proposal will be submitted by the US research team, for the two research teams of the US universities and Finnish research institutions. The single proposal must show that the proposed research is collaborative and interactive between the respective teams, and must provide a distinct budget for the US research team in U.S. dollars and a distinct budget for the Finland research team in Euros. The 2 PIs, one belonging to the US research team and one belonging to the Finland research team, will work with the US and Finland technical points of contact listed in the NOFO to ensure the research stays fundamental and collaborative during its progress.
Award details: The total funding from the  DoD available for the grant awarded from this NFO is estimated to be $4M, supporting 2-4 funded faculty researchers. The US DoD funding will be used exclusively for research performed by the US research team. The grant awarded from this NFO is contingent on the availability of funds, the specific topic, and the scope of the proposed work. For the US research team, expected annual funding will not exceed $1M per year.

NIH / Multiple Institutes
Program: Addressing Health and Health Care Disparities among Sexual and Gender Minority Populations (R01)
NOFO #: PAR-24-077
Synopsis: Supports innovative observational and intervention-based research to identify and characterize the pathways and mechanisms through which health and health care disparities occur among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations of minoritized racial/ethnic and socioeconomic statuses (SES). The main objective of this funding opportunity is to address health and healthcare disparities among SGM populations by identifying etiological mechanisms and pathways and developing and evaluating interventions focused on racial and ethnic minoritized populations and those of lower SES. Intersectional approaches that consider different social identities of persons within families, households, and communities are encouraged. Projects that utilize a syndemics lens (i.e., multiple disease states interlinked by social, environmental, and structural conditions) to examine SGM disparities in co-occurring health conditions are also encouraged. Studies should consider life course approaches especially in terms of critical transitional periods for SGM populations. In addition, exploring the role of inequality-generating mechanisms that are implicated in SGM health disparities such as racism and discrimination, classism, sexism, ageism, and other power structures is also encouraged. Projects are encouraged to examine resiliency and protective factors as well as ways to promote health and well-being. Please consult NOFO to learn of institute-specific objectives.
Award details: The maximum budget request is $500K for direct costs for a maximum 5-year project period.
