Today, and all week, we are joining the millions of people around our planet celebrating and honouring the ocean. It is a time to learn about the impact we have on the ocean and how the ocean impacts us and our planet. Join us in exploring the new National Marine Conservation Area - Tallurutiup Imanga; listen to an interview with Sarah Harmer and a song inspired by this region; watch a powerful call to action by youth in the “Two Breaths” video; enjoy a live concert with Ian Tamblyn. and much more on The Bridge!

Ian Tamblyn is a Juno award winning singer/songwriter who has led songwriting workshops for youth on SOI’s expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic since 2011. Join us on June 18th at 7pm EST for a live interview with Ian and learn about his background; hear his tips for budding musicians; and enjoy live performances by Ian and SOI alumni Jesse Byrne and Kathy Snowball! This week explore Tallurutiup Imanga, the National Marine Conservation Area in the northeastern region of Nunavut, at the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage. Rich in biodiversity, this area has been a home to Inuit since time immemorial. In 2019, Tallurutiup Imanga was designated a National Marine Conservation Area.

Youth voices are louder than ever and it’s time to listen. On the Students on Ice Arctic 2019 expedition,130 youth from around the world were brought together on a life-changing journey to learn about the past, present and future of the Arctic. They have one message they want you to hear: Do Better. Watch here.

Alumni Making Waves

Fascinated by the interplay between human activities and the environmental condition, Denise Lee, is a champion of endangered species, the beautiful North, and clean energy policies. Driven by her love of marine mammals, Denise is a founding member of the Porpoise Conservation Society, an organization with international reach that aims to protect porpoises and their habitats through research and education. However, climate change is threatening the health of the ocean and our planet.  June 8th marks the 25th anniversary of World Oceans Day, an annual celebration of our oceans and an opportunity to better understand this incredible underwater world, its importance and opportunities to protect it. Learn more
