Tips to Surviving a Seasonal Slump |
Earlier this month, the clocks shifted and so comes a brisk chill, falling leaves, and shorter days with fall shifting into winter. 🍂
These changes may feel slight, but can have a significant physiological impact. You may notice a shift in energy levels, increasing appetite, and a general desire for greater rest - all of these are cues our bodies have evolved to help us connect with the changes in our environment.
Read from one of our Peer Wellbeing Ambassadors, Ellie, who dives deeper how the change of seasons impacts the mind and body in her blog exploring wintertime wellness❄️
As we round out the last three weeks of the semester, here are some tips from our Health Education team on navigating the seasonal stress that comes with this time of the year:
| Embrace opportunities to invest in yourself with restorative practices
- Save recipes, movies, and books and crafts that stimulate your curiosity to make early sunsets and long nights something to look forward to
-
Decorate your space with colorful reminders that the sun will come back like mirrors, lamps, reflective objects... and if all else fails bundle up and go outside to recharge with some time in the sun!
- Listen nonjudgmentally to your body's cues for an early bed time or an extra snack
Find ways to add warmth and color into your life - literally and figuratively!
- Movement is medicine, so make time to move through yoga, a workout class, or even plan walks with friends to get a cup of cocoa to help you stay active, social, and warm up the spirit!
-
Check in with your people, sharing how you're doing and seeing where folks could use a boost. A little love goes a long way.
Fill in the gaps with professional guidance and care
- Build your stress management skills with a pro accountability buddy aka a Wellness Coach
-
Share your feelings about how seasonal changes are impacting you at a same day session with the Counseling Center

Introducing the Wellness Exchange: A 24/7 Basic Needs Self-Service Station |
We’re excited to announce a new satellite location at the Peterson Heritage Center (PHC) 📍 where students can access free food, clothing, hygiene items, and wellness kits — at any time, no questions asked.
National trends are showing that an increasing amount of the population are facing basic needs insecurity:
-
According to a national study from The Hope Center for Student Basic Needs, 73% of students experience basic needs insecurity.
- Results from the National College Health Assessment on our campus just a few years ago found that nearly 40%, or 2 in 5 students at the University of Utah, have experienced food insecurity this past year.
| |
Based on research and collaboration between the Center for Campus Wellness, Housing & Dining Programs, and the Office of Residence Life, we are launching a pilot program to address the growing levels of basic needs insecurity on our campus. Introducing, the Wellness Exchange!
Through this one year pilot we aim to close the gap with a space where students can take what they need and give what they can, all in a stigma-free environment.
✨ Don’t need anything right now? You can still help!
✅ Donate shelf-stable food or gently used clothing
➡️Drop donations in the clear plastic container right next to the PHC Wellness Exchange door.
✅ Or simply tidy up and leave the space better than you found it, every act of care counts.
We are conducting a survey to hear from students who use the space to learn how this space impacts their wellbeing and if they would like to see it become a permanent program at the University.
