In Medieval manuscripts the stump of Jesse is vividly illustrated. Jesse, the father of David the King lies on the ground on his side with his head being supported by his arm and hand. He is in a sleeping/meditative position. Emerging from Jesse is a tree with many different branches shooting out. In the center of the tree is Mary holding the Christ Child in her lap. On each of the branches you will find the names from the genealogy of Jesus Christ that we read about in today’s gospel. Here we find patriarchs and matriarchs, kings and soldiers, saints and sinners in the genealogy of Jesus. This is a reminder to us that Jesus’ genealogy contains an array of people who lived upright lives and some who did not. It isa reminder that Jesus came to save all people the saints and the sinners.
In today’s day and age ancestory.com is a popular app that people use to discover their ancestors, their heritage. Many will be delighted to discover who is in their family tree, others may be disappointed or embarrassed to discover their past relatives. In the end it is a reminder to us that we too come from a background of saints and sinners, a background we can learn from and give thanks for our heritage knowing that Christ came to call all people to himself. As we approach Christmas we will gather at the table with family and friends and be reminded of our roots. Let us pray for those we are related to both past and present to give thanks that we are all connected to the family of Jesus Christ born to save us all.

O God, Creator and Redeemer of human nature, who willed that Your Word should take flesh in an ever-virgin womb, look with favor on our prayers, that Your Only Begotten Son, having taken to himself our humanity, may be pleased to grant us a share in His divinity. Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Roman Missal)
