PSU launches new undergraduate teaching degree |
Portland State University and the College of Education are proud to announce the launch of its innovative Elementary Education Bachelor’s degree program, offering undergraduates a direct pathway to becoming a licensed teacher in Oregon. The program is now accepting students for the fall term 2024. Traditionally, students have pursued their teaching license after completing a graduate-level program at PSU. If you are interested in becoming an elementary school teacher, review the admission requirements.

Your pre-ordered caps, gowns and other regalia items can be picked up weekdays at the University Market in Smith Memorial Student Union. Haven’t ordered regalia for your ceremony yet? Connect with others and participate in research opportunities |
Interested in research and not sure where to start? Apply for the Summer Research Academy (SRA)! SRA is an event to learn about different types of research across disciplines and to connect with the people behind research opportunities. This 3-day event will take place on June 18, 20 and 21 at PSU. The application deadline has been extended to this Friday, May 24!
The goals of SRA are for students to:

Apply to be an academic coach
|
The Learning Center is hiring academic coaches for the 2024-25 school year. Academic coaches help other students develop learning strategies as well as goal-setting and self-management skills. To be eligible, applicants must be admitted to a PSU graduate program for academic year 2024-25. A STEM, education or counseling background is preferred. The position pays $18.00 per hour and is a commitment of 15 to 20 hours per week of in-person work.

Celebrate global cultures at International Night this Friday |
This Friday, May 24, is International Night — an opportunity to celebrate and share diverse cultures with the PSU and Portland community. The event will showcase a variety of cultural performances (singing, dancing, instrumental acts, and a fashion show) as well as multicultural cuisine and cultural booths. Come and enjoy cultures from all over the world! Everyone is welcome. Tickets are free for PSU students and $5 for the general public — tickets are required for entry. This student-organized event is from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Viking Pavilion.

Explore recovery with SHAC’s Peer Recovery Support Program |
The Peer Recovery Support Program is building a recovery community at PSU. The Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is offering Peer Recovery Support for students in recovery from substance use and students who are interested in exploring recovery.
Peer Recovery Support hosts weekly SMART Recovery meetings. SMART Recovery focuses on science-based tools and empowerment drawn from CBT, DBT and more to support individuals in recovery. All are welcome, whether they practice this recovery model or are new to it. SMART Recovery is abstinence-focused.
Our weekly meeting schedule this term is:

- Mondays 12-1 p.m.
- Wednesdays 1-2 & 3-4 p.m.
- Fridays 12-1 p.m.

We also provide a Sober Social Hour event on Fridays from 2-3 pm on May 24, and June 7. Grab a coffee, talk recovery, or just enjoy creating new friendships with other students in recovery.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at Portland State University presents Long Story Short: 2024 BFA/MFA Showcase, an exhibition of work by the 2024 graduates of the Master of Fine Arts in Contemporary Art Practices programs (Studio Practice and Art + Social Practice) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Practice in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. The exhibition runs Tuesday, May 21 through June 8, with a public reception on Thursday, May 23, from 5 – 7 pm at JSMA at PSU. The JSMA is located in Fariborz Maseeh Hall on the Broadway St. entrance.

PSU Theater dissects identity and friendship on the soccer field |
Opening May 23, PSU Theater presents Pulitzer Prize finalist "The Wolves" by Sarah DeLappe. A muscular contemporary coming-of-age story, "The Wolves" offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of a high school girls’ indoor soccer team. Set against the AstroTurf backdrop of the team’s winter season, the play explores thorny and shifting landscapes of identity, friendship, competition, and belonging. With a powerful blend of humor and vulnerability, the play asks its audience to encounter the ferocious reality of growing up. Tickets are free for PSU students with ID. Runs through June 1 at the Lincoln Boiler Room Theater in Lincoln Hall.
