2 Samuel 23:1-4
These are the last words of David:  “The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse,
the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,
the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
    the hero of Israel’s songs:
“The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me;
his word was on my tongue.
The God of Israel spoke,
the Rock of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,
he is like the light of morning at sunrise
    on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain
that brings grass from the earth.’

New International Version (NIV)
If you have to have the last word, what will your last word be?  Surgeon Joseph Henry Green was checking his own pulse as he lay dying. His last word: “Stopped.”  What would you like to say with your final words?  It is worth thinking about!

David’s last words are recorded here for us.  His words remind us of the later words of Isaiah and of his descendant Jesus:  “The Spirit of the Lord is on me.”  David’s words have deep spiritual significance.  His last words are about God.  He calls God his Rock and chooses to rule in the fear of the Lord.  A ruler who rules justly is like the sunrise on a cloudless morning.

Since we don’t know when we will speak our last words, we should make every word count.  It is likely that the theme of our lives will be the theme of our final days and last words.  The famous missionary to Burma, Adoniram Judson wrote, “I go with the gladness of a boy bounding away from school. I feel so strong in Christ.”  Great hymn writer Charles Wesley wrote, ““I shall be satisfied with Thy likeness. Satisfied!”
Pray with me:
Lord, Eternal Word made flesh, we ask that you, who spoke the first word of creation will have the last word of benediction in our lives.  Help us to use our words wisely today.  We long for the day when we see you face to face and say, “Jesus Christ is Lord.”  In his name we pray.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
