Finals Week extended hours |
|
|
For Reading Days and Finals Week, the library will be expanding its hours so you can work on a project with a group, lock in for silent study time or check out course reserves and get help finding books for your theses.
Hours will be:
Tuesday, May 6 - Monday, May 12, including Friday, Saturday and Sunday:
Second and Third floors will be open 8 a.m. - 11 p.m.
The first floor will remain open 24 hours a day.
During Finals, coffee and snacks will be provided near the Circulation desk on the first floor. Sodexo is generously donating coffee and tea, and the Library is supplying healthy snacks after the campus eateries close for the day.
If you need a study break and your brain is fried, stop by the display on the second floor, which will have a variety of de-stressing activities, like puzzles, coloring pages and more.

Meet the library staff: Dan Mulvey |
| |
For the library’s last interview of the academic year, we’re highlighting a fount of institutional knowledge, Access Services Manager Dan Mulvey. Of working in the library, Dan had this to say: “I love working in a place which is an intellectual hub of the campus, where we can connect people with the resources they need for their research. I must love it here, because I’ll soon be completing my 37th year!”
As the Access Services Manager, Dan oversees the daily operations of the Access Services department, and the many services provided at the circulation desk, “including Interlibrary Loan, Course Reserves, helping patrons find and check out materials in the library— plus organizing materials on the library shelves and maintaining the physical spaces.” He’s had the opportunity to see drastic changes in the

services provided by the library: “For most of my years here, I’ve worked in interlibrary loan and have seen the service and technologies evolve.” Speaking of interlibrary loan, Dan counts the service as one of his favorites! “The fact that we can borrow books and articles from libraries all over the world and maintain this as a free service to our campus users is a very cool thing.”
Having grown up in the Geneva area, Dan says his favorite thing about the HWS community is “meeting and working with interesting students and faculty from all over the world. As a Geneva resident, I think HWS has always played a crucial role in the vitality of the Geneva community.” You can usually find Dan at the circulation desk, but what about when he’s not? “I’ve spent summers on Seneca Lake my whole life, and have always enjoyed sailing. I also enjoy learning (or struggling to learn) the piano.”
When asked to offer up a favorite book, Dan was stumped. “That’s a tough one to narrow down. When you work in a library, it becomes a case of ‘too many books, too little time!’ […] I encourage people to find a section in the library that interests them and just browse— you never know where it will take you!”

| This May, we say goodbye to two students who have been an enormous help in the Archives.
Shaan Vernenkar has been working in the archives for two years, and in that time, he has helped inventory more than 2,000 athletic films and 5000 photo negatives. A Classics major, he recently completed a book display (see photo) with accompanying digital exhibit researching and partly translating a 16th-century volume of Persius.

Sophia Mughal has been the Library Research Fellow for the past year. She organized and donated 15 years of student government meeting minutes, processed the Alan Frishman papers, Lewis C. Strang collection, the Men’s Studies Collection and curated an exhibit of Folk Fest t-shirts. She also researched and wrote a digital exhibit on the two Hebrew scrolls in the archives and presented this work at this year’s HWS Day.
Both students have been an immense help in the Archives, and we wish them the best finishing out their time with us and in all their future endeavors. They will be missed!
