The CMU Portugal Program currently has open applications for the following calls:

Affiliated Ph.D. Programs: 12 scholarships are available in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT); the application deadline is May 12th, 2026.

Mobility Programs: 20 grants are available for students, faculty, and researchers to conduct a research period at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU); the application deadline is May 14th, 2026

These initiatives, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), aim to strengthen research excellence between Portugal and the United States.

Between April and May 2026, the CMU Portugal Program is hosting "Research Unplugged @CMUPortugal", a series of 30-minute talks featuring leading faculty and researchers from both sides of the Atlantic. Hosted by National Co-Directors Inês Lynce and João Magalhães, these conversations will focus on cutting-edge research and collaboration.

João Barros, former CMU Portugal national director (2009-2012), will preside over the Board of Directors of the new Agency for Research and Innovation (AI²), which brings together the responsibilities previously assigned to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the National Innovation Agency (ANI).

Irene Fonseca, the Director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis at Carnegie Mellon and long-time CMU Portugal collaborator, was announced as the latest recipient of the distinction awarded by Universidade de Lisboa, for her enduring contributions to research, education, and scientific collaboration.

Alexandre Ferreira da Silva (Universidade do Minho) was interviewed by the “90 Segundos de Ciência” podcast, about the CMU Portugal’s Exploratory Research Project “PROMETHEUS” of which resulted in Portugal’s first PocketQube satellite, “Prometheus-1”, which launched into space in January 2025.

Neeta Khanuja, CMU Portugal Dual Ph.D. student, co-wrote the winning paper “Towards Fluent Interaction with Cyber-Physical Architecture" at the conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (ACM CHI 2026), the leading international conference on Human-Computer Interaction.
