Distance Teaching & Learning Conference
August 12 - 14, 2014 in Madison, WI
This is the 30th year for the distance teaching and learning conference, an opportunity to position you to succeed in the new realities of 21st century distance education. UW-Stout Online has four instructors presenting at the conference: Anna Bell, Renee Chandler, Kay Lehmann and Susan Manning.
10 Online Teaching Best Practices for Facilitating Instruction Part 2
  1. Create a sense of presence in your online course. (In other words, show up and teach!)
  2. Communicate clear instructor and student expectations at the start of the course. (e.g., communication, student-content engagement, grading assignments)
  3. Post regular announcements and updates in the News area of the learning management system - Learn@UW-Stout or D2L.
  4. Combine course concept learning with customized and personal learning.
  5. Utilize active learning techniques throughout the online course.
  6. Prepare discussion posts that invite questions, discussions, reflections and responses, where the instructor is consistently involved in the online discussion.
  7. Include ungraded self-quizzes for each unit/module to boost student learning.
  8. Survey your online students for feedback (e.g., How's the course going? or Do you have any suggestions?) in addition to providing prompt instructor-student feedback.
  9. Help online students maintain a continuous, forward progress.
  10. Plan for the unexpected over the duration of the course.
    (e.g., learning management system/technology issues, instructor/student emergencies)
Chat with the Director
As an online student or instructor, your voice matters. Stout Online Director Doug Stevens will hold open chat hours the third Tuesday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
