Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: Two-Generation Solutions
Economic instability has tremendously impacted our communities, especially among young families, and there is a growing chorus of voices calling for new models and solutions that meet the needs of both young parents and their children collectively. Two-generation programming provides an important poverty reduction roadmap for young families, making service providers, policy makers, and government officials key stakeholders in moving this strategy forward. NHSA's policy report, Breaking the Cycle of Poverty in Young Families: Two-Generation Policy Recommendations, highlights effective, evidence-based two-generation policy and programs across multiple states.

This report was made possible through generous support from The Annie E. Casey Foundation and ASCEND at the Aspen Institute.
The conclusions in the report, released last April, warrant further attention and conversation within the sector. With continued support from The Annie E. Casey Foundation, NHSA will publish the next phase of its two-generation research this spring. The forthcoming report will examine three state models of coordinated two-generation family support programs. In April, we will convene a panel of experts to develop this research into a two-generation “policy framework” for other states to follow.
Learning the New Narrative
The focus on reframing the human services narrative continued this month with trainings for communications, development, and public policy professionals from NHSA member organizations, as well as with other groups in the region. Irv Katz was also interviewed about reframing recently for an article by Charitable Advisors and for an article with the Chronicle of Philanthropy that will be coming out in the near future.
