Isaiah 30:15-18
This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:“In repentance and rest is your salvation,
    in quietness and trust is your strength,
    but you would have none of it.
You said, ‘No, we will flee on horses.’
    Therefore you will flee!
You said, ‘We will ride off on swift horses.’
    Therefore your pursuers will be swift!
A thousand will flee
    at the threat of one;
at the threat of five
    you will all flee away,
till you are left
    like a flagstaff on a mountaintop,
    like a banner on a hill.”
Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
    therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a God of justice.
    Blessed are all who wait for him!

New International Version (NIV)
                 “Don’t just stand there.  Do something!”  In our activist age, we express our self-sufficiency by taking matters into our own hands.  I hate to ask, but I need to ask.  How is that working for us?

                In a series of “woes”, Isaiah pronounced God’s judgment on his own people.  They were prepared to find help by turning to other governments.  God’s word was definitive:  “Your salvation and strength all depend on being still and knowing that I am God !”  If they wanted to flee they would flee and find no help.  But the Lord wanted to help them.

                We, too are busy.  Busyness is not just of the devil.  Busyness is the devil.  In our self-sufficiency we set out to solve our own problems and find ourselves in a greater mess.  What if we turned and rested?  What if we stopped and trusted?  Only in our waiting do we discover the grace and compassion of our just God.  In his time God will bless us if we wait.  Otherwise, we are on our own.  So don’t just do something.  Stand there!

 Pray with me:
Gracious Father, thank you for the gift of rest. Help us to turn from our self-sufficiency today.  Your love has always been more than enough for us.  Show us that we are not diminished by our quietness and restful waiting.  Enlarge us as we trust you.  Remind us that you have been waiting for us to wait so that you can show us what you want to do.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
  This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
