A Note from Peter Henke
The work we do as a collaborative is essential to improving patient care and outcomes for cardiovascular patients across Michigan. We are proud to be one of many Collaborative Quality Initiatives sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of many other organizations, networks, and institutions in the state whose mission is to promote health and wellbeing.
Partnering with both Healthy Behavior Optimization for Michigan (HBOM) and the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN) is one way we can expand our work and draw from the expertise of others as a resource.
We are thankful that experts from both HBOM and Michigan OPEN have presented at BMC2 meetings recently. We have also been fortunate to include resources from both groups on our BMC2 website. We recently added information on pain management for patients, courtesy of Michigan OPEN, and smoking cessation resources from HBOM. We hope you will utilize these resources as you work toward improving the lives of your patients.
THANKS for the work you do each day. We appreciate your dedication and partnership.

Michigan Cardiac Rehab (MiCR) Network Toolkit is Now Available
As shared in our last newsletter, BMC2 and the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC) have teamed up to form the new Michigan Cardiac Rehab (MiCR) Network. Despite the prominence of cardiovascular disease, too few patients and their families are familiar with cardiac rehabilitation, a life-changing program available to our cardiac patients. To help providers meet the new state-wide goal of 40% cardiac rehab utilization for TAVR, SAVR, CABG, PCI, and AMI patients, MiCR has created a new toolkit.
The kit outlines initiation, maintenance, and innovation strategies for increasing utilization of cardiac rehab and includes metrics. We invite you to turn to this tool often as you work to encourage the enrollment of more patients in cardiac rehab programs. For more information on MiCR and cardiac rehab efforts, visit bmc2.org.

New PCI Best Practice Protocol
The PCI Best Practice Protocol Task Force has put together a new best practice protocol (BPP) for prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI). Prevention of CI-AKI requires attention to two goals, adequate pre-procedural hydration and renal function-based contrast dosing. This BPP offers a step-by-step outline of prevention of AKI including information on pre-procedure hydration, additional considerations, and follow up. The full protocol can be viewed under the “Quality Improvement” section of our website. Thank you to our PCI best practice protocol task force, Michael Tucciarone of Beaumont Troy, Javier Valle of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, Ryan Madder of Spectrum Health, Edouard Daher of Ascension St. John, and BMC2 Program Director, Hitinder Gurm and Associate Program Director, Devraj Sukul. Patient Spotlight - Greg Merritt
On February 25th, 2012, Greg Merritt was a 46-year-old who considered himself in good shape. He had recently returned to a healthy routine, losing about 30 pounds. However, that morning he awoke with what he thought was heartburn. Greg mentioned it to his wife, who immediately expressed concern. She knew it wasn’t normal for her husband to have heartburn and suggested they make a trip to the emergency room. They got in the car and made their way from Brighton, MI, toward Michigan Medicine.
They had just passed North Territorial Road on US-23, about 8 miles from the hospital when Greg experienced sudden cardiac arrest. His wife was faced with making a split-second decision. Should she pull over and attempt CPR? Or continue driving as fast as she could, hoping to make it to the hospital on time? Visit our blog to read more of Greg's story.

HBOM Smoking Cessation Resources Now Available on BMC2.org
Tobacco is the single greatest preventable cause of disease and premature death in America. It’s estimated that 70% of smokers want to quit. However, in Michigan, only 15% receive treatment to help them do so.
Our partner in quality improvement and improved outcomes for patients, Healthy Behavior Optimization for Michigan (HBOM), has developed a series of wonderful resources for smoking cessation both for patients and providers. These resources are now available on bmc2.org under “Member Resources” and then “Smoking Cessation Resources.”
Visit this section on our website for smoking cessation guides, hotlines, and information for specialized populations. There’s even information on how you can order smoking cessation toolkits customized to include a waiting room poster, Michigan Tobacco Quitline cards, resource guides, and other helpful tools. Click here for a direct link to the HBOM smoking cessation resources.
