Acts 7: 17-19
17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased. 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.

New International Version (NIV)
Thomas Fuller wrote, “It is always darkest before the dawn.” I think we must be getting close to dawn! The pervasive darkness in our world, like the coming eclipse, threatens to take away the light. What darkness occludes our view of God today?

As the time of deliverance drew near for the Israelites in ancient Egypt, a Pharaoh who did not know Joseph rose to power. Israel had grown to a great number of people.  Fearing rebellion, Pharaoh oppressed them, forcing them to expose their newborn children until they died. Darkness.

“But God!”  In his sermon, Stephen said, “The time drew near for God to fulfill his promises.”  When the world is at its worst, God is so often at his very best. On Friday they crucified our Lord. But God! Sunday was coming. Just so with the Israelites. In the fullness of Israel’s time of captivity, God was about to change the world by sending a baby.

Toby Mac sings, “Help is on the way . . . rounding the corner.” Do not give up on hope.  Just when it seems that things will never get better, God’s plan comes to fruition. All the promises of God are “yes and amen” in Jesus. Hold tightly to his promises. I know it is dark sometimes. Keep looking for the light. We are getting closer to dawn.

Pray with me:
Father, we confess that the times we live in confound us. We wonder if there is any hope for the future. Remind us again of all the promises you have made to us in Christ. Help us to hold on to hope today. We know you will come through. You always do. In Jesus’ name, we trust and pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
