2024 Summer Camp Schedule |

|
| From the Executive Director,
Fall is here and we are already seeing leaves fall. There are a few things I want to share with you that are coming up.
First, you may have noticed at the very top of this newsletter it says volunteer opportunities. Seriously. This camp cannot get everything done and keep this place looking great year around all by ourselves. We do need your help. Please consider volunteering this fall to help us keep Hanging Rock looking great.
Second, We are very thankful for the donations coming in for the flooring projects. WOW!!! Either you thought this is a REAL need, or you are just being extremely generous. Honestly, anyone looking at the floors in the gym, classrooms and dining room would see what a need it is. We are still in need of some more donations to cover the cost. We have decided to just sand, wax and clean up the floor in the dining room until we decide on the direction we are going with the dining room. We have also decided to paint the gym and put new carpet around the walls. And, paint the Rock Wall. This building needed some attention after 22 years of service. So we are needing extra funds to help clean up and make the gym look great.
Third, join us in December for our Fundraiser Banquet to continue to support the camp. We are excited to have John Thomas and Tommy back with us again. Remember, this does sell out. So you better get your tables quickly.
Thanks for all the donations and for volunteering. We appreciate you so much!

| From the Associate Director,
It is crazy to think that summer camp was over almost 2 months ago! It seems like it was just yesterday that the dining hall was full of campers and staff laughing and having a good time. We have stayed busy here around camp with hosting several field trips that we do food service for and retreat groups. There really isn’t much time to relax some days around here. I did take some time, a few weeks ago, to crunch some numbers from the food service side of things.
It is always fun to look at some of these numbers to get an idea of how much food we go through each summer. These numbers are just for summer camp only. This summer we served over 580 pounds of salad mix, 92 gallons of apple juice, 70 gallons of orange juice. The campers, staff, and faculty ate 4,800 chocolate chips cookies, 360 pizzas or 2,880 slices, over 7,000 slices of cheese were used for burgers, mac and cheese, or Hanging Rock famous scrambled eggs. There were over 2,200 hamburgers grilled, over 5,000 pancakes were flipped, 92 cases or 7,200 chicken tenders were eaten. All those chicken tenders, fries, and burgers used 42 gallons of ketchup and probably the most midwestern stat of all… 49 gallons of ranch was consumed this summer. Like I said, it is fun to look at numbers in that light.
Most people just cannot comprehend how much food it takes to feed all the people who are here. Record-breaking numbers in attendance make for record-breaking numbers in food service.

| From the Maintenance Director,
Fall is here, my favorite time of the year! I can see it in the leaves and hear it as acorns fall on the tin roof. I can feel it in the cooler temperatures and even smell it around my house with all the home canning going on. But best of all, I can taste it! This past Tuesday I had a piece of fresh persimmon pudding! Delightful! But I digress.
Speaking of fall and cooler weather though. The 413ers, camp "vols" who know that they "can do all things through Christ who strengthens" will be meeting on the 3rd Thursday in October, the 19th. A couple of things on the list to address that day include the construction of a wooden corral on the back property. The old one was dilapidated and has already been removed. We also need to install new boards on one of the trailers.
There are numerous other projects around camp that could use your skills so please don't be deterred if those I mentioned aren't something you excel at. If you can get your schedule freed up enough on 10/19 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, to come to camp, we'd love to work with you! We will have coffee all day and we will provide lunch at noon.
Also,
We are looking for those who have an interest in plants, the placement, care and growth of them. If botany is something you dabble in, if you are a Master Gardener, Gardener or General Green-Thumb, would you consider bringing your skills and love for plants to Hanging Rock? If at all possible we could work out a rotation with you and other like-minded folks to help keep our herbage beautiful! It would be great if you could come to the 413ers on the 19th as well.
Thank you, hope to see you soon!
