Teaching Tips

This week’s teaching tips focus on strategies for scaffolding ethical scholarly work (academic integrity, proper citations, etc.) for our students. These tips highlight key resources shared in our newest on-demand resource co-created with UNCG faculty:
  • Consider a pre-test at the start of the semester to see how much your students know about integrity and ethical work and maybe another to see if they can identify good/bad examples of ethical work in a disciplinary context.
  • Allow time during the course to discuss and provide strategies and resources that students can use to avoid plagiarism and other academic integrity faux pas.
  • Give the opportunity for scaffolded use of citations/references with in class activities and formative assessments. Examples from UNCG are in the on-demand resource, too.
  • CHEGG and COURSE HERO are American online learning platforms that promote textbook rental, online tutoring, and course specific study resources that includes assessments (and the answers!).  One way of discouraging students from posting course content online is to include a statement in your syllabus that students do not have your permission to post any of your intellectual property on these websites and that you will follow through with an academic integrity violation if they are found and the person responsible for the post is identified.
