From the Executive Director

Dear Cottage Theatre family,

About once a week, I go out onto center stage and sing a song to our empty auditorium, just to keep the energy in the space alive. Today I sang "Put on a Happy Face" from Bye, Bye Birdie, which was the very first musical I was ever in (a really long time ago!) I think that song popped into my mind due to the lyric "and spread sunshine all over the place!" which seems fitting on this absolutely beautiful sunny day in Cottage Grove.

That's my coronavirus ritual. What's yours?

Though Lane County has now entered Phase 1 of reopening, it will still be quite some time before large group gatherings in confined spaces are permitted and safe again. So we wait. And that leads me to the old "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?" conundrum: if an actor performs on a stage, but there is no audience, does it still count as theatre?

Until we can be together again, be well . . . and spread kindness!

Your questions answered here

Question: I heard the federal CARES act included changes to tax-deductibility of charitable contributions. Can you explain?
Answer: Yes, the CARES act includes an additional incentive for donations to charitable nonprofit organizations (like CT). Beginning in 2020, individuals who take the Standard Deduction may deduct up to $300 of qualified charitable contributions from their adjusted gross income. (Those who itemize their deductions via Schedule A, will still be able to deduct their charitable gifts in the usual manner.) So no matter whether you itemize or not, you can save on your taxes while supporting the organizations you love!
Create some magic for your future

Like every performing arts organization, Cottage Theatre faces some significant financial challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have already cut as many ongoing expenses as possible during this crisis, but some core operating costs continue whether or not we are holding performances.

If you are in a position to make a donation to help ensure that CT maintains its footing for the future, we  and your future fellow audience members — will be very grateful.
