As the weather warms up, an increase in unwanted pests is inevitable. From ants and termites to rodents and mosquitoes, summer can create the ideal conditions for insects and critters to come out of the woodwork (literally!) and take up residence in or near your home. The good news is that a few preventative measures can go a long way toward keeping pests at bay.
1. Start outside.
Walk around your home and check for gaps, cracks, and openings where pests could enter. Pay close attention to the areas around doors and windows—sealing these off with caulking can help keep critters outside where they belong.
2. Control moisture.
Many pests are attracted to damp environments, especially during the warmer months when water is harder to come by. Clogged gutters, poor grading and drainage, and standing water near the home can welcome insects close.
3. Trim vegetation.
Overgrown shrubs, tree limbs, stored firewood, and mulch placed too close to siding may create hiding places and pathways for rodents and insects. Make sure that vegetation is trimmed back, with a 12 to 18-inch gap.
4. Up your cleaning game.
When it comes to the interior of your home, good housekeeping habits can make a big difference. Keep counters free of crumbs, and make sure your garbage can doesn’t get to a point where it’s overflowing. Keep all food items sealed in airtight containers, and if you have a pet, consider stashing their food away when they’re not eating.
5. Keep your eyes peeled.
If insects or rodents have already invaded, there are usually signs. Be on the lookout for droppings, damaged wood, scratching sounds, and debris.
While no home is completely pest-proof, preventative maintenance can significantly reduce the likelihood of infestations. Staying proactive throughout the summer months can help protect your home and help reduce the likelihood of costly repairs or professional extermination.
