This and That
  • Back to School Night is this Thursday, October 5th.  The purpose of Back to School is to discuss the curriculum, procedures and expectations in each classroom.  It is not to discuss individual children.  The opportunity to discuss your child’s progress will be during the week of November 13th, when the teachers have had more of a chance to get to know your child as a learner.  Teachers will make appointments with each family during that week.  Of course, teachers are available throughout the year if you wish to have an appointment.  Specialists (Art, Music, PE, Spanish) will be available in their rooms beginning at 5:45 p.m.  At 6:30 p.m. everyone will move into the classrooms for presentations by the classroom teachers.  These presentations will be approximately one hour.  Babysitting will be available.
  • Our first Community Meeting will be held on Friday, October 13th.  A Community Meeting is a celebration of the children’s work.  It also brings our community together, with everyone cheering for the performers. At each meeting a number of children, from all grade levels, will have the opportunity to share work or to perform.  This teaches children performance and public speaking skills, while allowing them to highlight something that makes them proud.  The meeting will be held in the gym beginning at 8:45 a.m. and will last until about 10:00. All parents are encouraged to attend.
  • We are now a nut-free school.  The question has come up, “Why now?”  The answer is simple, the number of students with allergies has expanded tremendously.  We have 27 students at all grade levels with severe allergies.  In addition, a number of adults in the school have the same concerns. The nurse is holding onto 24 Epi-pens from these students in addition to several generic Epi-pens.  A recent report on ABC news indicated that the incidence of allergies is rising, including the incidence amongst adults.  A severe allergic reaction causes the throat to close up and to cut off breathing.  This can take only a few minutes to occur.  We do not want any of our staff or students to go through this.  While I am sorry for the inconvenience, the thought of a child gasping for breath is just too scary.  There are some wonderful substitutes for peanut butter (please mark the package as “Not Peanut Butter) that have been previously listed.  Because we are now nut-free, please be sure to check labels for any snacks that you send in.
  • 8th graders are diligently working on their high school applications.  This has become especially intense this year, since some of the high schools have moved up the deadline for accepting applications. Also, the high schools that require portfolios have indicated that they must be digital (that means pictures, scans of work, etc.).  Our guidance counselor, Darcy, has provided the students with information on how this is to be done.  Regan, our humanities teacher, has offered to meet with each student to discuss the essay.  If you have an 8th grader, please be sure that he/she drafts the essay and works with Regan in a timely manner.  Each meeting takes a great deal of time.  Waiting for the last minute just does not work.
  • Morning Drop Off and Afternoon Pick Up in front of our building is once again becoming hazardous.  It takes just one or two people not following the rules to create a domino effect.  It is dangerous to double park and let a child out of the car to walk through other cars that are pulling out of a spot.  It also blocks the roadway so that no one can move.  It is dangerous to make a U-turn in the middle of the street—we have had several fender-benders from that maneuver.  It stops traffic flow, causing other people to drop off children unsafely.  Please pull all the way forward so that there is room behind you for other cars.  Remember, even in the bad weather, there is an overhang along the length of the building that will keep the children out of the rain and snow.

RUGBY

The Elysian Charter School Rugby Club is accepting registration forms for the fall 2017 season.  Registration is open to all Elysian students in grades 4-8.  Fifth grade teacher, John Rutledge, will once again be leading the Club!
The Club will meet for weekly practice on Thursdays from 3:00-3:45pm at 1600 Park.  Practice will begin on Thursday, October 5th and run the following dates (weather permitting) – 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2 and 11/9.  Please have students dress appropriately for outdoor practices and bring a water bottle.  With the field so close, I am able to walk the Club members to practice.  We’ll meet outside at dismissal.  Pick-up is promptly at 3:45. After-school students will be escorted back to school or to the park after practice.
The fall season will focus on the fundamentals of flag rugby.  We’ll review rules, participate in drills and have practice scrimmages.  The fall season will also serve as a try-out for the upcoming spring season.  Once the spring season rolls around, we will field two teams with a maximum total of 24 players.  There will be an elementary team (grades 4-5) and a middle school team (grades 6-8) each with a maximum of 12 players.  In the spring, we’ll have weekly practices, participate in scrimmages with other clubs and take part in the NYC Ruby Cup tournament in June.
Extension:  Complete and return the registration form to your classroom teacher by Wednesday, October 4th.

Help Wanted - Morgan Book Project!

Lynne Shapiro is looking for a parent to help her pick an e-book site and get started (so she avoids pitfalls) with preserving last year's illuminated manuscripts into a single print-on-demand book.  If successful, this will be replicated this year for 3rd and 6th grade books.
    Anyone! Please help! lynne.shapiro@ecsnj.org.
