West African Drumming Lessons
Each semester, the Griot hosts a unique musical opportunity for students, staff, faculty, and community members: African Drumming Lessons. Taught by local music teacher, Hope Kopf, who learned to drum during her travels to West Africa, the lessons share West African culture and history through the medium of music making it an interactive and engaging way to learn something new.
This semester's participants shared their experiences:
"It has been so much fun to drum with Hope and all the loveley ladies. I'm looking forward to learning more and seeing this lovely group in the Spring again." - Naomi Ellenbogen
"As a community member, I enjoy both the drumming and getting to know your wonderful students. Hope is an excellent teacher." - Sandy Heim
"It is a fun way to learn a new genre of music and the West African tradition. Hope makes it interesting and enjoyable. Great meeting new drummers! (Base tone, tone base slop, tone tone)" - Lynn Eckley
"Drumming is such a great stress reliever and is so much fun! We had a great group–I've looked forward to every week!" - Patty Schwarz
"I really enjoyed meeting new people and learning something new. Hope taught us the true art of African drumming!" - Kim Thompson
