I asked a therapist friend about the level of depression in our culture these days. She said that she is seeing more anxiety than depression. Both are real problem. Are you anxious? Family Systems Theorist Murray Bowen envisioned a day when the anxiety in families would run rampant in the culture and lead to a societal regression. In other words things would get worse in the world reflecting the anxiety of families. Was he right? Is this that time? What makes us most anxious today?
Peter wrote to believers encouraging us to cast all our anxiety on God because he cares for us personally! It is true that we face the real problem of evil in our world. Christians are suffering in various parts of the globe. How do we know God can help? Our God is gracious and glorious. Simply put: God is both willing and able to help us. By his grace he has called us to eternal glory. We don’t want to “suffer for a little while,” do we? But Paul would say, “our momentary and light sufferings are producing a far greater glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). God is making something out of us. God will make us strong, firm and steadfast!
