Genesis 29:9-11
While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherd.  When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep.   Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud.
New International Version (NIV)
Boy meets girl, but where?  At the well.  Have you ever noticed that love stories in the Bible sometimes start at the well?  Abraham’s servant found a wife for his master Isaac at a well.  Now Isaac and Rebecca’s son goes to the same well and finds a wife.  One wonders what Rachel thought of Jacob who cried and kissed her.  It is a “Hallmark mystery” in the making.
Jacob’s story foreshadows and contributes to the mystique of the story of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well.  She had been married many times and was now living with a man.  Then Jesus came and asked her for water.  It is a different kind of love story.  Jesus did not want to marry the woman, but he did love her.  She ends up rejoicing with friends as Jesus saves her city.
The many love stories in the Bible form one larger love story, the greatest love story of all.  Abraham wouldn’t send his son to the foreign land, but God willingly sent his Son into our dangerous world.  As he knew all about the Samaritan woman and met her where she was, so God desires to meet us and to satisfy the thirst in our souls.  So Jesus stood up on the day of the great feast and asked, “Is anyone thirsty?  Let him come to me and drink . . .”  We could meet him at the well, and never thirst again.
Pray with me:
Father, you know the thirst of our souls.  We come first to you so you may satisfy our desires with good things.  Thank you for finding us and loving us.  Now that we have experienced your love, let us live lives of love, and stay in love with you forever.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.
Let’s focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he leads us.
He will not fail.  Neither will we!
Joyfully,
Duane
