Mark 8:27-29
Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”  They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”  “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”  Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
New International Version (NIV)
Who do you people say Jesus is?  If we took a survey in our world, we might find a variety of answers.  Some would surely say he was a good teacher.  Others a miracle worker.  Some would doubt he ever existed.

After Jesus healed the deaf, multiplied fish and loaves, and healed a blind man, he and his disciples landed in Caesarea Philippi.  Along the way he asked them who people said he was.  “John the Baptist, Elijah, one of the prophets,” they replied.  “What about you?”  Peter answered, “You are the messiah.”  Jesus told them not to tell and then predicted his own death.  Peter corrected him.  From the mountain top, Peter moved quickly to the valley.  “Get behind me Satan.”

Some times our greatest moments and our worst moments follow closely together.  If Jesus is Messiah, why would Peter think he could tell him not to talk about dying?

What about you?  Who do you say Jesus is?  C. S. Lewis famously answered, “Jesus is a liar or a lunatic or he is Lord.”  Lewis said Jesus left no room for the patronizing nonsense that he was a good teacher.  He did not intend to.  If we believe that Jesus was the Messiah, it changes everything.  His death, burial and resurrection become the singular greatest moment in history.  If we believe Jesus is God’s Son, then we must deny ourselves, take up our cross daily and follow him.  He spoke this as he headed inexorably toward the hill called “the skull.”  Someday everyone will know who Jesus is.  We might as well start today!
Pray with me:
Father, show us ourselves in your word.  Show us our sin in your word.  Show us our Savior in your word.  Make your book live to us.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
